I still don't quite understand why you are reacting so strongly to this. Semantics is inherently messy, there's no way around that. The words you use carry all sorts of baggage, historical, cultural, political, you name it. So whichever words you use, you position yourself.

Now what's wrong with spelling out some of the baggage and implications of using certain words? We are, and we should be doing it all the time. It's also part of the joy of reading.

Noone criticizes the usage of the word sideloading for being artificial. That is only a data point. The word just happens to pop up when people are starting to say that it's weird to install an Android app through "adb install" rather than the app store.

As far as Apple, doesn't the name "sideloading" make sense? I started using iStuff relatively late, bur as I recall, you couldn't just copy things to iDevices, you neeedd to go through iTunes.

You can copy direct, but no official Apple app will recognise the content.
Once the iPhone or iPad is no longer supported by the store, you can't install any app. There are apps that will work with directly copied content.

And if someone factory resets an older Apple phone/tablet, then the "open" apps are gone. You can just about play music, but only copying your own mp3s via iTunes (not on Linux and minimum Windows 7) and the stock music app. So on an iPhone6, no video or ebooks.
OTOH older Android 3 or Android 4.x gear, that can't now connect to app store can have apps installed direct and read epub, listen to mp3 or watch video.
Oldest Android still able to install some apps from Store is now 5.x

Apple & MS deliberately make working gear be fit for landfill, yet it's Android that's mocked. There are rubbish product running Android.

If you overheat the pizza in the air fryer, you can use the microwave to kind of fix the over done crust.

When did you last use anything Apple? I haven't opened iTunes for years. I just use the Finder to put files on my iDevices, or toss them with Airdrop, or put them in Dropbox.

That works for you, but for those that want to use Apple apps:

I will use email for things I can (pdfs, txt, doc, ...). Does Finder-Airdrop-dropbox, work for mp3s (with the Apple music app and Denon music app)?

I came from non-Apple environments. I don't use Macs. When I started with Apple, I don't think you could "just copy", or use airdrop, or use dropbox: so "sideloading" seemed like a sensible term at the time, and I don't see a problem still using it. YMMV.

Not Apple Music, but other apps. I just airdropped a mp3 from my computer to my phone and it plays in VLC, for example.

The statement I was responding to was "you couldn't just copy things to iDevices". That's what I was rebutting.

I can copy for VLC since forever on Linux to an iPhone if it has VLC. But as I pointed out earlier, if it's an older iPhone that's been factory reset it won't have VLC. Only the stock player, and that can only see files loaded by iTunes or similar Apple SW (in my case on Win7 VM). VLC can't be installed if the phone no longer supported by Apple Store.

So you can't just copy to iThings, unless you either can add an app (ONLY via Store) or use approved Apple software. It's a walled garden.
