ADE and Google Play problem

Oh, and just a note about upgrading to Version 2.0 of ADE.

I thought it was crashing the next time I went to download a book (gee, ADE being flakey, who'd have thunk?) but I think it was just trying to process my largish library and I was being impatient.

Once all the book covers etc reappeared then it all worked as normal.

You might want to open ADE before you download a book the first time just to make sure it isn't going to topple over.

My TBR (aka 'Everest') has enough books in it that I have a healthy buffer to fall back on until the time that sanity prevails and they stop slapping DRM on everything that moves.

If the stores all move to the new encryption then I will just buy all of my books from Amazon. They can see how they like them apples...

You won't be the only one. Fortunately, I think most of the stores are aware of this. Last time Adobe changed DRM they just did it and got away with it. This time it seems they had to give in. If stores do go this way (or also if publishers raise prices too high) I expect a number of consequences. Amazon will gain a lot of customers (assuming of course they do not do something similarly stupid). Library borrowings will increase. And, of course, some users will simply hoist the Jolly Roger and sail happily off into the sunset, penalising not only the rapacious publishers but also potentially denying authors their tiny royalties (if they have been lucky enough to earn out).

Actually, it is only the authors that I have sympathy for in this. If I have to stop buying their books, I might feel compelled to contact them and let them know the reason why.

Perhaps the Authors will come to realize that with the internet they can market ebooks, and make money, even without there being a pbook. If they get popular enough they can do what established musicians and actors do, create their own "record label" or "production company". The technology puts the Authors in the position to "do it on their own", if they learn how and get the right help. Fan based editing/checking can work. Someday there will be: "From the hit e-book to a Major Motion Picture, in a theater near you, soon" Actually, I expect the theater might be gone and it be streamed or on whatever replaces DVDs.

Yes, that is correct. I should have been clearer. I meant DRM that couldn't be removed.

Yeah I've got the 2.0 download in case I need it.

Which it's looking like I might. But this problem is definitely Google Play related as I just bought some books from Kobo that ADE 1.7.2 unlocked just fine.

I have some Google Play credit so used to pre-order some books.

I'm trying to remember why I uninstalled 2.0 and went back to 1.7.2. I wish past me had left future/now me a note.


ETA: Since I cannot remember why I got rid of 2.0 on this PC, I downloaded 2.0 to my laptop, opened the book and then copied ithe epub to my ADE folder on the PC. The book still opens fine in 1.7.2 it just isn't showing in the library view of 1.7.2. but as long as I can open it and get it into Calibre I'm happy. If the error starts happening with other vendors then I will update the PC version to 2.0 as well.

I have a distant recollection that 2.0 has security issues, but don't beat me if I'm wrong.

I just ran into this too.

Upgrading to 2.0 resolved the issue and everything on the Calibre end is working correctly. I also re-tested a Kobo book, everything works correctly there as well. I was really worried about upgrading from my creaky old 1.7.2.

I was happy to see 2.0 did not upgrade/overwrite 1.7.2 so I now have both versions on my machine.

BTW - I emailed Google 24 hours ago any haven't heard anything from them yet.

Having similar problem. Got an error message when I tried to DL a newly purchase book into ADE. However, was able to successfully DL a previously purchased book already in my Google Play Books library. I just checked Google Play Books help files & it says they use Adobe's ACS4 DRM. Am currently using ADE 2 & have been reluctant to upgrade as I have had no issues up until now.

Thank you for posting that. I didn't realise that you could keep 1.7.2 as well. I had uninstalled that and then downloaded 2.0. I think I will reinstall 1.7.2 as it is much more stable and I don't like the appearance of 2.0.

When you download a book, though, which one automatically opens?

With regard to Google, I never received any acknowledgement or response to my request to their help department .
