I'm using 2.0 - this version can't use the newer drm. I believe it's version 3.0 and above that can use the new drm.

Ok thanks guys. I didn't do anything to change my firewall settings as ADE was still working fine with overdrive and Kobo, but I uninstalled the 1.7.2 version of ADE and installed version 2.0 (and again deleted any files in the restore > failed folder of ADE) and I am happy to report it now works fine.

Not sure what version cadele is using, but if its an older version perhaps like for me installing version 2.0 will help?

I stayed on ADE 1.7.2 for quite a while, but discovered to my dismay that Overdrive started requiring at least 2.0. (Or, at least, how Overdrive handles my library's offerings required 2.0). Perhaps something similar has happened with Google Play.

I don't believe ADE 2.0 handles anything server-side differently from ADE 1.7
I can verify I can still checkout the odd EPUB-only book from my OverDrive websites.

(I haven't in a while as it is an unpleasant experience for me, reading in ADE on the computer.)

Well, all I can relate is my own experience. ADE 1.7.2 refused to fulfill my library loans. I got an error message (which unfortunately I can no longer remember) that when googled led me to believe I needed to upgrade. Once I upgraded, all my problems went away.

1.7.2 is still working for me so I'm going to keep it as long as possible.

Everyone should grab 2.0 while you can. Someone on Apprentice Alf's blog got the new drm from a small shop in Spain -

Thanks to everyone for this post. I just got this error today with a book from Google Play. I too was using ADE 1.7.2. I just grabbed 2.0 and solved this problem (for now).

Google has said this is an Adobe problem, but the uniqueness of the problem to Google among epub vendors suggests otherwise, to me at least

It is google's problem, I just check the logs and the license from the adobe servers is being transferred, the problem is when tying to download the epub from google, not getting a connection to the download server for some reason.

I am using 1.7.1 running under wine Mint 17.1 Linux.

Exactly! If I can't de-DRM the book I *paid* for then I am not going to buy the book.

My TBR (aka 'Everest') has enough books in it that I have a healthy buffer to fall back on until the time that sanity prevails and they stop slapping DRM on everything that moves.

It kills me that I am the one ultimately paying for the lock that keeps me out of the item I paid hard earned money for.

If the stores all move to the new encryption then I will just buy all of my books from Amazon. They can see how they like them apples...
