				Calibre and metadata embedding

			Hi,

I'm new of calibre, and i'm liking it. However there are a couple of things i do not fully understand: 1) How does Calibre embed metadata into files? does it use adobe xMP? or does it use specific file format facilities for metadata? 2) How does Calibre read embedded metadata from files? can it read xMP metadata, or does it read only specific formats' metadata? 3) It seems to me that calibre cannot embed metadata in all file formats. For example djvu and chm seems to not retain the metadata upon saving to disk. Is this documented somewhere? and also, does this mean calibre does not export into xMP? thanks!

I believe calibre can read and save xmp metadata for PDF.

For the usual ebook formats, MOBI, EPUB and AZW3, there are documented internal metadata formats. EPUB uses Dublin Core attributes in the OPF inside the EPUB container. AZW3 and MOBI use the mobipocket exth fields, which are database records. I am not sure djvu and chm support metadadata. It really is up to the individual format specs. |
