One series that I still really enjoy is October Daye by Seanan McGuire. The latest book The Winter Long was just released and was quite good. There is a strong series plot in this series, which I highly appreciate in Urban Fantasy. |

Other than that, I've not done a heck of a lot of pleasure reading. I'm doing a ton of supplemental reading for my two Coursera courses that I'm taking online right now: Dino 101: Dinosaur Paleobiology https://www.coursera.org/#course/dino101 and Understanding Video Games https://www.coursera.org/#course/uvg Having a BLAST doing them. As far as pleasure reading, I absolutely loved, loved LOVED, "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, and I'm gonna reread it pretty soon. I also did my yearly reread of David Eddings "The Belgariad & Mallorean" series. Also about a billion out loud readings of "Fun on the Farm", "My First Words", "M is for Maple: A Canadian Alphabet" and "Star Wars ABC's". Man, it's tough to think of Star Wars words on the fly to replace all the prequel nonsense in those books. "G is for General Grevious. General Grevious has Glowing lightsabers". Nope, I don't think so. How bout "G is for Greedo. Sorry about the mess."

The baby's first giggle line has me thinking of an evil wizard with a stockpile of infants held in magical stasis. To fuel his power he has to pop one out and make it laugh.

There he is, in the midst of a massive battle, playing peekaboo with an infant. "My Lord! Our west flank is being overrun! We need a maelstrom blast to repel the enemy!" "I'm working on it! I'm working on it! You! Make this brat laugh!" |

The evil wizard's big problem is each infant is good for only one shot, and determining if they've had their first real giggle.

There's a significant amount of "misfires" so it may take several to get a good one. What does the evil wizard do with the "spent" infants? Probably has them raised to be minions, or dragon food. Could be that the process of extracting the giggle magic power also drains their soul. An army of soulless minions who can't walk (let alone use weapons) and poop their pants isn't very useful. Dunno, he never says and those who inquire generally aren't heard from again. Last edited by bizzybody; 09-15-2014 at 10:01 PM. |
