How do you know it was the hacks. Maybe your kindle just glitzed itself. If it worked fine once you had hacked it, then I would say it wasnt the hack. Did you try reset to factory settings?

Well Clint that would be kind of selfish to worry only about my "embarrassment". My post is meant as a warning to others that may be considering doing this.

Oh and Clint, your post contradicts your presumption.

Have a nice day.

In fact I always make a issue of upgrading my firmware on all my hardware day 1 in case they brick and I just send them back as DOA, Although touch wood I've never had a problem with hacks or upgrading firmware, As long as you read through the instructions a few times you should be ok, I'm pretty obsessive about reading instructions numerous times
Well I know I installed the latest versions for the right device. I triple check everything before before installing. The strange thing is the SS worked fine with no issues for several days. When I changed the font it worked for hours with no issues then it all went bad in the middle of a page turn. So the bottom line is I can't say definitively it was the hacks. But I certainly won't be trying again with the new one.

Oh, and in my original post I stated that I couldn't run the un-install hacks once the K3 went down. Got the "Update not successful" message. So having the un-install .bin didn't help.

Pushka you could be right. And I agree, that's why I said it "may" have killed my K3.

PS, You can't re-set to factory settings when clicking on "settings" just takes you back to the home page. Believe me I was deperately trying to get to that "reset to factory" selection. The proverbial You can't get there from here, was working full force.

Hacking devices like the Kindle with no escape route is like mountain climbing without protection -tough.

Installed the SS hack the day it was made available, no problems whatsoever yet. My K2 ran for months and months and is still going strong with its SS and font hacks.

I'm going to vote 'something else happened.'

A warning is good, but don't forget the priceless (sometimes literarely)fun one can have by tinkering with an ereader.
I reprogrammed and heaven knows what all on my iLiad and for months at an end all went super. I was called ' Momma the hacker' by the family. It was exciting because I had never had anything to do with electronic devices. I just loved it and learned a lot; like reading instructions very carefully, but too late........iLiad dead....heartbroken.....gave it away.
Now I'm happy as what with my new Kindle (had to make do with an iPad in the meantime), but as I said before somewhere on the forum:
I even don't look any more at the upperside of Mobile Read where it says: Developpers.

Maybe it wasn't the hack that bricked your Kindle. Today my Kindle crashed when I was trying to open a converted document with Japanese characters. I tried for several minutes to return it back to life. Initially even the 15 second reset with power button didn't seem to have any effect. Then I fully charged it and this trick worked and I only lost some settings.

On the other had this appears to be connected with fonts and you had font hack installed, so it might be font hack's fault after all.

Still it is not normal that a simple document can crash a reader whatever the formatting. Amazon should look into this bug.

So you buy a device, and if you screw it up by hacking it you send it back and claim that that is was the manufacturers fault? Nice.

The Screensaver hack seems to work fine on the K3. I would definitely stay away from the fonts hack on the K3 until @NiLuJe gets the bugs worked out. A lot of folks are having problems with it, and when it does work the fonts tend to not look very good. The K3 apparently is much more tricky to hack as far as fonts go than the K2 and K DXes. Read the last several pages of this thread:

*not gonna post here...* *not gonna post here...* *not gonna... aww, crap.*

I'd just like to point out, that, in itself, both hacks can essentially be reduced to *one* single command line whose sole purpose is to swap one folder for another. There's nothing fancy or really 'hackish' involved.

So, while there may be some behavioral changes (or quite possibly just simple bugs in the system/framework, but that's not my place to say, nor can I be sure about that) in the fw 3.x framework that can cause things to go a bit weird in certain particular conditions, particularly on the fonts side on things (solely because it's something used constantly, and not from time to time like the ss), the worst that could happen because of the hacks should be fixed by a simple restart, be it soft or hard.
In the meantime, I'm working on ways to workaround these potential issues so that the process can be as painless as possible.

Aside from this, like jswinden said, the K3 uses different font rendering settings, and that can be far more unforgiving toward crappy fonts than on the K2. But that's another issue entierely, and that doesn't really have much to do with the hacks. We just happen to use the renderer, nothing we can do about it.

Also, I'd like to ask the people who have no idea what they're talking about to refrain from flaming/trolling, but I guess that may be too much to ask... .

(And I'm not talking about the OP here, I just wish we'd heard from him over in the dev forum before, that might have helped avoid such a troll-inducing thread ).

And Mr. Perfection speaks!

I applaud the OP for trying out the mod and for letting people know of a potential problem. It takes guts and confidence to do both. Take that as you may.

Why the hell doesn't Amazon just listen to our suggestions and implement some stuff we would like to have on our Kindles. That will prevent us from hacking our devices and will also make Kindle more marketable. Yes Amazon enjoys the monopoly now but once pearl screens and bigger devices pop up on the market it might loose its market share. No offence Kindle is a great device and I like my DXG but the lack of simple features prevents me from keeping it in a long run. I ll just trade it in once Pocket Book and other makers will release their goodies.
