The extension ".azw" is used for pretty much any format by that software. Calibre detects the actual format for each book and changes the imported file type appropriately. As pdurrant wrote, some books downloaded by Kindle for PC will not be in KFX format.

If an .azw.res file is present for KF8 (.azw3) format, it holds high resolution images associated with the book. Calibre does not handle those automatically. See this thread for more information: How to download full resolution images?

I don't know of any comparison table between formats.

The Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) help page on Enhanced Typesetting (here) gives an overview of the major KFX features.

I took a look at that book and saw that it contains a badly coded advertising page created by the publisher. This is being converted poorly by Amazon, resulting in inconsistent formatting in the KFX file.

I will release an update to this plugin handling that case within the new few days.

Bug description ??? THIS IS MY FIRST EVER POST - SO NOT SURE IF IT IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE.
I am using Mac Kindle 1.23.1 to download amazon purchased books. I am using KFX input conversion plugin 1.26.0 in Calibre.
I keep up with the latest Calibre updates and was using version 4.7.
I drag the .azw file from the "My Kindle Contents" folder to Calibre to
import. The format in Calibre ENDS UP BEING "KFX-Zip" AND WHEN CONVERTING KFX-ZIP TO EPUB GET A 'CANNOT CONVERT BECAUSE OF DRM'.
From my investigations into the matter found out that this may be a result of
incorrect DRM removal on adding .azw file to Calibre and the KFX input
conversion plugin (I think). I tried a whole raft of things to resolve
to no avail, including zipping the Kindle files and changing the extension to KFX-zip.
HOWEVER, I DID FIND A SOLUTION (A WORK AROUND).
MY RESOLUTION:- I REINSTALLED CALIBRE VERSION 4.5. This is the last
version of Calibre that I used successfully to upload .azw to Calibre
resulting in KFX format (It is still using the 1.26.0 plugin) - IT WORKED. SO MY CONCLUSION IS THAT, FOR SOME REASON, BETWEEN VERSION 4.5 AND 4.7 THE "KFX INPUT CONVERSION PLUGIN" IS NOT WORKING AND .azw files ARE ENDING UP AS KFX-ZIP FORMAT IN CALIBRE OR I HAVE SLIPPED UP SOMEWHERE.

I can confirm the bug report above. Reverting to calibre 4.5 solved the problem while still using latest versions of all plugins. Debug logs:

The KFX Input plugin is working properly. The incompatibility is between the plugin being used for DRM removal and calibre version 4.6 and later.

Discussion of the DRM removal process is not allowed on MobileRead. Please report problems with that at either Apprentice Alf's Blog or Apprentice Harper's GitHub.

That is an error from the KFX Output plugin. It indicates that the text of the book contains a unicode character that Amazon's Kindle Previewer does not support.

If you want to convert that book to KFX you will need to determine which character is causing the problem using trial and error and remove it using the calibre editor. The result may not be worth the effort involved for you.
