broken screen

I just purchased my kobo aura less than three months ago and it's in good condition doesn't get dropped or anything and when I went to turn it on today and it wouldn't leave the sleep screen. I kept trying to turn it on and eventually the screen just started filling with all these lines and wouldn't respond to anything. I tried powering it off, charging it, resetting it and nothing's working. it had been sitting in my bag for about a week or so in a separate pouch from everything else so I don't understand how it could've gotten damaged in there. I'm pretty sure it was purchased through the kobo site itself so I don't know if I could go to chapters for help with it or anything and I was wondering if it would be covered under warranty or if there was somewhere else I could go to get it fixed for free or a decent price. I don't understand how it happened could it be a defect or something?

no it is just a standard aura. I don't think humidity has anything to do with the problem it's always in my house with me and is always by my side

The glass substrate part of the screen is broken. The screen is damaged.

Did you have your Aura in a case? Did maybe something n your bag bash your Aura? Did you maybe plunk down your bag too hard? Something was done to the Aura to cause the screen to break.

no I didn't have it in a case but it was always in a safe spot. the only thing I can think of is I sometimes put my phone in there with it but is the screen really that sensitive that my phone hitting it would cause it to break? is there anyway that kobo will fix this for me or will I have to buy a new ereader? I've had it less than three months I would think all electronics should be under warranty for at least that long

The challenge is that a warranty covers manufacturing issues and not usage issues.... You can get in touch with Kobo and see what they say, but don't be surprised if they decline to replace the device.

Would need new screen to fix and new screens are only sold with rest of the reader. Diagonal lines on screen is one sign of damaged screen. Your screen looked good when off with image before damage. When it was turned on screen refreshed showing damage. Often damage is caused by twisting reader while in back pack of case. It doesn't take much to cause this damage. I broke one laying on console between front car seats with a little elbow pressure. Pelican Case company sells water proof rigid cases for phones and tablets that can protect reader in back pack or suitcase. Walmart also sells a case like the pelican case for less money. Make a rigid wood case custom fit for you reader will also provide good protection but not water proof. I carry my Kobo Mini in shirt pocket or front loose fitting trouser pocket with no case. Wish I could buy another one as backup spare. Have even taken ereader on roller coaster rides without damage. Luck and careful, more luck than careful.

You've fractured the screen substrate - the thin layer of glass that's under the outer screen. This is not a warranty issue; it's user damage.

For the image to change on eInk it needs electricity; the image displayed by eInk is static - it only consumes power when you update it to a new image. You can break eInk screen and it won't change the display much - until you try to draw a new image, then it all goes haywire.

It's impossible to repair, even if you could find a replacement screen [which is usually as expensive as a new reader], out of all Kobo devices the Aura is probably the most difficult to open and actually perform such replacements.

Basically a reader with broken eInk is worthless.

Best you could hope for is sell it for a small sum to someone who might be able to use a broken reader for something. Like someone who bricked theirs: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=264435

You should have been using a case. That helps with some bumps, bashes, and drops. It's not perfect, but it gives better protection than not having a case. And putting a Reader in a bag with no case is a rather bad idea. You can bash the bag unknowingly. Something in the bag can bash the Reader. So next time, get a case. I sometimes carry my H2O with me in a bag or knapsack and I have never broken the screen. I've had a number of Readers and never a broken screen. Every one has been in a case.

Yes, the phone hitting or leaning on the screen of your Kobo while being in your bag is sounds the most likely cause, and while the screens are fragile to this kind of damage (twisting or bending, pressure from another object on part of the screen etc), you have just been unlucky.

I don't like my ereader in a case for general use and *touch wood* I have never yet damaged one, but although I occasionally carry it in a soft sleeve, whenever I take it anywhere in a bag, I put it in a hard cover to protect the screen from exactly this kind of situation. So if you get a replacement, it is worth spending a little extra to get a case for it and hopefully avoid this kind of irreparable damage in future.

It tends not to be impacts that break screen, but bending forces.
