An update for the T1 (1.0.05.11130) was posted the same day: http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-...OC=3#/howtoTab

Both updates are Nov 2012, over a year ago.
So apparently I misread the dates all around and was right that the updates were on the same day... just not right about the year.

I'm not sure about whether Sony will update the T1 and T2 for the new RMSDK, but this from the Kobo faq at http://www.kobo.com/sony?utm_source=sonyNA indicates they might at least provide SOME update to address the Reader Store closing:

Can I use my Reader from Sony to buy eBooks directly from Kobo? (Top)
In late March, we will release an update to the Reader for PC/Mac® software that will enable you to directly connect to the Kobo Store for future purchases. You can use the software then to also transfer the titles via USB to any of your Reader models from Sony .

In late May 2014, Kobo will launch a version of its eBook Store that you will be able to access directly from your Wi-Fi Reader (PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3) from Sony .

The Reader PRS-900 and PRS-950 devices will no longer have direct access to an eBook store after Reader Store closes. However, any eBooks purchased from Kobo can still be loaded onto your device via USB transfer.

If this is going to work smoothly, I think it's the best support one could have hoped for. The T1 is already 2 generations old. Many companies don't even bother with products of that age.

I really hope that means Kobo has a fix for the EPUB3 "no download button" bug in the works...because if not, this is not a true statement.

The problem is that Adobe CANNOT expect every reader, every app, every program to be updated to handle this new DRM. So I don't see this being much of an issue. If Adobe wants people to switch to Amazon, then they'll make this new DRM the only DRM and once people can no longer user their DRMed eBooks on their device/app, then they will move to Amazon. Is Adobe that stupid? I don't think so. Are eBookstores that sell ePub like B&N & Kobo that stupid to change the DRM server? I don't think so.

I still see reverse engineering as that would mean that a lot of people would no longer be able to take advantage of library ePub. My 650 has no WiFi and I don't see Sony supporting the new DRM on it. There are some devices where the company who made it are no longer in business. Also, some of the eBook shops here the ePub was purchased are no longer in business. Even when we had the move to Kobo for Borders and Sony, not everyone got 100% of their ePub moved over.

If Adobe is trying to fore a new DRM on us, all it will do is drive us to Amazon. I don;t think the BPH that are fighting Amazon will want us to flock there. SO I think the BPH will be in the side of the consumer in terms of this new DRM. I cannot see Hatchette being on the side of this new DRM given their battle with Amazon. It just makes no sense to make it so we can no longer read our eBooks on the devices we own that still work that won't be upgraded to use the new DRM.

I've been in situations recently where I had no access to WiFi or cell data. If my eBooks had to phone home, I'd not have been able to read. This is a fail of a system if that's how it's to be. My 650 cannot phone home. It has no hardware to do so. So even if Sony was to try to update the firmware for this new DRM, it would not work. Remember DivX that had to phone home? Where is it now? It's long dead and buried.

The T1, T2, & T3 will be able to download the ePub using the ASCM file. Older Sony readers cannot except the 900 (if the firmware is updated to allow this). All of the older Sony Readers do not have WiFI or cell data. So they cannot connect to an Adobe server to download the ePub.

Also, there are a number of Readers that won't ever get upgraded that are still in use today. Some might not even be possible to upgrade to handle the new DRM because there might not be enough space in the hardware.

All we know is that once ADE 3.0 is installed and an ePub is download that becomes ADE 3.0 encrypted and no longer works on a user's Reader, that's the day Amazon wins.

That page has links to ADE 3.0 and ADE 2.0.1. I suggest downloading ADE 2.0.1 and if anyone has installed ADE 3.0, replace it with ADE 2.0.1.

Also, when you look at the what's new, the first thing you see is...

ADE 3.0 Features

More Secure DRM Scheme
Digital Rights Management scheme to protect ePub and PDF files from unauthorized viewing is now hardened and made more secure.
This should be enough to say STAY THE FRIG AWAY FROM ADE 3.0!!!!!!!

If you don't use ADE 3.0 and stick with ADE 2.0.1, then there is no way you'll download an ePub with the new DRM.

I am not sure if this is the same thing but here goes. I purchased a book from Kobo and when I went to download it to ADE so that I could put it on a SD card it did not have that option anymore. When I contacted Kobo they told me that it was because the publisher had put it on the site as an ePub3 file. I was somewhat ticked because I have ereaders that are full and I like to use a SD card. Yet I can go to other websites and download the same book to ADE. Hmm any help here.

The "upgrade" would still have to happen almost all at once to be able to pull something like that off, so I don't see anything like that really having much of a chance of succeeding.

Mostly, I see it hurting the smaller ePub stores and helping Amazon if resellers were forced (piecemeal) to adopt the more strict DRM scheme "at gunpoint." And if it's not at gunpoint, I can't see them upgrading at all.

Interesting times ahead.
If that's what Adobe and the BPH all think, then they all have their heads firmly entrenched up their read ends. When people install ADE 3.0 to a new computer and start downloading ePub that they cannot use with their existing Reader/app/whatever they use to read with and there is no update available to handle the new DRM, then this is when Amazon wins. This is when people jump ship from ePub and arch on over to Amazon because Amazon still works. I don't see how this can be a strategy that will do anything but give more business to Amazon.

Use Calibre to manage your Kobo. Don't use Kobo's program.
