Sorry Don but I read Akshayy's response as being helpful. (He/she answered my question primarily)
I'm not sure that English is their first language |

This guarantees that the old DRM has to stay around for a long time to come. Quote:

At this point in time, *ALL* EPUB readers that are on sale *NOW* are old readers, so there *WILL* be problems. Even if Adobe provides a download link for ADE 2.x, they'll need to state very clearly why it is there, and why people would want it, or anybody with a currently sold new reader will download ADE 3.x and be in trouble. (This is also true for people who re-install their computer or that sort of thing.) Last edited by Katsunami; 01-25-2014 at 04:01 PM. |

My guess is that Kobo might have a bigger US share than you give them credit for (I can't back that up, it's just a gut feel). But regardless they are probably in a little better position since other than the original Kobo and the Kobo Wifi, all the e-ink devices are using basically the same firmware. So they only need to update current firmware and they'll cover off the vast majority of their devices in use. While the original Kobo was market changer in it's day (for bringing e-reader prices down to a mass market range), I suspect a large percentage of them have been retired because they were a pretty basic device. There are probably more Kobo Wifi's still in use and they could be more of an issue in terms of what you suggest.

ade 3 has bug fixes for japanese languages and newer versions released in future will have more features! ade 2.0 will work forever, it will open all your older books and newer books too. As I have said if a particular bookstore enforces new drm, ade 2.0 will not open new books from this shop. ade 2.0 will open old books froms this bookstore! And no ade 2.0 won't get new features. It is available for download from adobe website! |

There's a one-word link on the ADE 3.x download page:

I'm confused. What actually changed DRM-wise in ADE 3.0?

@Akshayy I presume Sony will need to upgrade Sony Reader for PC to make it ADE3 compatible because they have the capacity to download epubs directly from the .acsm
Would that be right? |

In that case, it will keep downloading EPUBs with the old DRM, until Sony updates the device. Then, you'd either not update, or wouldn't use it to download the EPUB. Why do you use Sony Reader? My suggestion would be to just use ADE 2.x as long as it will run, and then Alf your books. Upload to the reader using Calibre. ADE 3.x uses a new encryption scheme. This will make all readers and applications available today incompatible with books downloaded with ADE 3.x. That's all there is to it. Last edited by Katsunami; 01-25-2014 at 04:43 PM. |

If sony pushes an update with rmsdk 10, then all books from sony pc reader will use new drm! I think sony would update all their devices, readers in one go! So that you could transfer between devices. |

Well, I stopped buying from iBooks when I could not longer painlessly read my purchased books on a device of my choice. If this eventually becomes the case with mainstream epubs, I will probably only buy DRM-free titles, e.g. at Baen. Amazon isn't an option as long as they don't take PayPal.
Considering how trivial it is to not have to deal with any of this and also save money, I don't really get why some companies are trying so hard to shoot themselves in the foot. One of the reasons why I buy books is because it is convenient, after all. (Admittedly, the main reason is to support authors.) |
