Sorry Don but I read Akshayy's response as being helpful. (He/she answered my question primarily)

So I forsee that many people who don't know much about DRM and stuff might update to ADE 3.0 ("Hey, there's a new version, why not?"), buy a bunch of books, download them, and then find out they won't work with their old reader anymore.
.
Ya, I use ALF'ed epubs for backup but I mostly use the Kobo kepub version to read, but my first thought was exactly what you said: this is going to be PR, logistics and support NIGHTMARE for Adobe. Anybody new to an ereader is automatically going to download the newest ADE and then be rather annoyed (shall we say to keep this family friendly) when they can't read the book on their shiny new reader. I'm really hoping that there is some misinformation or misunderstanding happening with this.

This will require that users upgrade their devices just to be able to read books from a particular publisher or store. The publisher or store is going to catch a lot of heat because of that.

Quote:
I don't know if Adobe will turn off content server 4, its mostly not happening any time soon.. it depends on all customers, if they have been migrated to latest version of clients. And if the publishers desire it.
That's what I'm saying: Many.... *MANY* customers will be using the current and older crop of e-readers for a *LONG* time to come. There are people here who are still reading on their Kindle 1 or 2, so there will also be people who are reading on EPUB-readers created in 2008-2009. There will also be 2012-ish EPUB-readers that'll stay in use until 2017 or maybe even 2020 and which will never be updated.

This guarantees that the old DRM has to stay around for a long time to come.

Quote:
You will always be able to read your old 1000s of books in ADE 3.0.
Obviously, but nobody I know reads books in ADE itself.

I think that Don is not referring to the posts as being unhelpful or anything, but toward the displayed attitude that the new DRM won't be any problem and that everything is quite simple. It isn't. Even combining the new ADE 3.x with an old(er) reader creates problems, as ADE 3.x will make the book use new DRM which will prohibit the reader from using the book.

At this point in time, *ALL* EPUB readers that are on sale *NOW* are old readers, so there *WILL* be problems. Even if Adobe provides a download link for ADE 2.x, they'll need to state very clearly why it is there, and why people would want it, or anybody with a currently sold new reader will download ADE 3.x and be in trouble. (This is also true for people who re-install their computer or that sort of thing.)

My guess is that Kobo might have a bigger US share than you give them credit for (I can't back that up, it's just a gut feel). But regardless they are probably in a little better position since other than the original Kobo and the Kobo Wifi, all the e-ink devices are using basically the same firmware. So they only need to update current firmware and they'll cover off the vast majority of their devices in use. While the original Kobo was market changer in it's day (for bringing e-reader prices down to a mass market range), I suspect a large percentage of them have been retired because they were a pretty basic device. There are probably more Kobo Wifi's still in use and they could be more of an issue in terms of what you suggest.

Yeah this is going to cause trouble in the short run! But lets hope your ebook reader will update to rmsdk 10, and that new ade 3 books will open in your reader.

ade 3 has bug fixes for japanese languages and newer versions released in future will have more features!
ade 2.0 will work forever, it will open all your older books and newer books too.
As I have said if a particular bookstore enforces new drm, ade 2.0 will not open new books from this shop. ade 2.0 will open old books froms this bookstore!

And no ade 2.0 won't get new features. It is available for download from adobe website!

This is perfectly correct! This is what I want to convey!
probably, my written English is terrible and not to the standards of these forums. please excuse.

one of my posts went into moderation question, I guess probably it was too long.

This is also correct! Unfortunately they will have to wait for updates on their eReaders if they opened the acsm in ADE 3.0 for the first time!
DL reader on android and iOS has updated to rmsdk 10, not sure about other readers yet.

I do not know if it's possible to remove ADE 3.x, replace it with ADE 2.x and then redownload the book by using the ASCM-file with ADE 2.x. If it's not, then the customer will have unknowingly scrambled a book into an unusable state, at least until he gets a new reader.
I only use Sony Reader for PC to download all my epubs (DRM free + DRM) so it seems the way to avoid ending up with an ADE3 encrypted book will be to not upgrade to Sony's next Reader software update.

@Akshayy I presume Sony will need to upgrade Sony Reader for PC to make it ADE3 compatible because they have the capacity to download epubs directly from the .acsm

Would that be right?

If that next update is going to use the ADE 3.0 DRM and you don't want that, then this is indeed correct.

Can Sony Readers (the device, not the program) download an EPUB, when you put the ASCM on the reader?

In that case, it will keep downloading EPUBs with the old DRM, until Sony updates the device. Then, you'd either not update, or wouldn't use it to download the EPUB.

Why do you use Sony Reader? My suggestion would be to just use ADE 2.x as long as it will run, and then Alf your books. Upload to the reader using Calibre.

ADE 3.x uses a new encryption scheme. This will make all readers and applications available today incompatible with books downloaded with ADE 3.x.

That's all there is to it.

I saw the download page for Sony pc reader. It says RMSDK 9.1!
If sony pushes an update with rmsdk 10, then all books from sony pc reader will use new drm!
I think sony would update all their devices, readers in one go! So that you could transfer between devices.

Well, I stopped buying from iBooks when I could not longer painlessly read my purchased books on a device of my choice. If this eventually becomes the case with mainstream epubs, I will probably only buy DRM-free titles, e.g. at Baen. Amazon isn't an option as long as they don't take PayPal.

Considering how trivial it is to not have to deal with any of this and also save money, I don't really get why some companies are trying so hard to shoot themselves in the foot. One of the reasons why I buy books is because it is convenient, after all. (Admittedly, the main reason is to support authors.)
