Thanks for the explanation. The new scheme, if implemented, does appear stronger.

I wonder if the cost (22c) increases?

How it gets implemented remains to be seen but the possibility of per-file encryption suggests you might need to authenticate each file individually every time it is downloaded to a device or ADE installation, not just when it is downloaded from the store to the PC. Layered encryption might require a live internet connection for authentication the first time a file is opened for reading.

Conceivably, a file might need three authentications with three different single-use keys to get it to open for the first time.
And all keys must be on the consumer's machine at some point.

Amazon's DRM generally uses a per-book and per-device encryption scheme. It doesn't seem to have helped.

I wonder if i<heart>cabbages relishes a new challenge?

Maybe not, but I just saw his name on ADE 3.0's Help/About splash screen.

I agree - I have ADE 1.7 on my desktop and 2.x on my laptop. I never upgraded my desktop because all I use it for is to download before disinfecting. I wonder if these older versions will work if a bookstore starts using Content Server 5? If not I'll just go all Amazon.

Sorry to butt in like this, but I think you need to be a little more open minded. Akshavy sounds Ukrainian or perhaps Armenian to me. If that is the case you can't expect Akshavy's English skills to be on par with most of the other members. Probably spending most of his time (and yes, I feel fairly sure we are talking about a male) on boards in his native language, this is how they discuss things, because the LOLs and the u r is the way they communicate having picked up those habits from hacker sites dominated by the under 20 crowd. He simply doesn't know anything else. Hopefully, if we are accepting, he will develop new and more mature linguistic habits here.

This.

At some point, pirating is just easier. Then, I can let others fuss about how to get the DRM off the files, get the online, and then I can download them and use them forever and everywhere... for FREE.

I don't like pirating, because the files are often of very low quality, being converted so often (or converted in retarded ways) that they've been mashed into an almost inrecognizable bunch of characters which takes a very long time to straighten out. It's not worth the time; I'd rather pay for a book that's good from the start (or needs very little tweaking).

The one requirement for me making me willing to pay for a book is that I can get it DRM-free either by downloading a book without DRM, or by stripping the DRM off. If that can't be done, I don't want it and I'll read something else.

Akshavy says that Content Server 5 will be able to deliver a book using the old DRM scheme if using ADE 2.x. However, he also said that sellers can enforce the use of the new DRM-scheme if they want to; this will cause ADE 2.x to be unable to open (maybe even to download) the book. Basically, enforcing the new DRM scheme comes down to dropping support for ADE 2.x and all current and older readers.

For such a seller, you would need to upgrade to ADE 3.x, and have an e-reader or application that understands the new DRM.

That's the bottom line for me as well. I like OWNING the books I buy. The day DRM becomes unbreakable and universal is the last day I ever buy an eBook. Of course, the hundreds that I have already purchased will remain in my library and completely accessible. DRM is malware.

@DiapDealer and @pdurrant
ok one more thing, if a bookstore or publisher is using ACS 4.0 then no new drm will be used. Even if the book first opens in ade 3.0 or ade 2.0!

I am not aware of the behavior of 4.1, I guess its not widely used.
I have explained how content server 4.2 and content server default 5.0 will behave. old + new drm based on first client.

And content server 5.0 in enforced mode will always use new DRM.

@Akshayy is there a way of establishing what content server edition an ebook is going to downloaded from prior to purchase?

For example, if I wanted to buy book x from Kobo - how could I determine which content server Kobo was using?

By the way - thank you very much for all your information

yes, they are using 4.0.3, you can find it using statuscheck url.
open the acsm file, see fulfillment link and add statuscheck at end

I'm still running 1.7. Should I upgrade to 2.0.1 now? Will that let me stick to the old DRM longer than if I keep 1.7, or won't there be a difference?
