I like how you think...
Wrong answers, but good ideas... The answer is on not one, but two state flags. THAT is how important this commodity was! And yes... I have been in Japan too long. I need to go to Bali. Stitchawl |

How rare is it? Like almost extinct rare or expensive rare? Do we still use this commodity today?

Standing absolutely straight, virgin White Pine, 200-300 years old was the perfect tree to be used as masts for Britain's tall ships, and any tree with a diameter of over 12" at breast height was considered to be Crown property. If your land had any of these trees, you had to pay a hefty tax to cut them down to clear the land for farming. If you cut them without paying, your lands would be seized and you AND your family would be imprisoned! THAT was the Pine Tree Tax, and it was a major factor in our entering into a war of independence. ShaYne, well done! You are the new quizzmaster! Stitchawl |

Fascinating, Stitchawl! I'd never heard of that.
And then the British came to New Zealand and found our magnificent Kauri trees were just the thing for masts. They're scarce and protected now - we're lucky enough to have several over a century old on our property, but they're a fraction the size of the true giants. Too near my bedtime to think of a question, so I'll turn it over to someone else. |

Only 8pm here, and my mom lets me stay up to 11, so I'll post another question.
Kyoto used to be the ancient capital of Japan, and the Emperor's palace is a beautiful example of Japanese architecture. It's one drawback was that were weren't enough moats or high enough walls to really protect the Emperor so they installed an absolutely amazing intruder alarm system that still functions well today, to the delight of sightseers visiting. What is that amazing alarm system? ![]() Stitchawl |

OK - this game originated in 16th century India, played by emperors, using harem girls dressed in different colors as game pieces on a courtyard of inlaid marble. Cowrie shells were thrown instead of dice.
