"No taxation without representation!" We learned that this was one of the motivators for separation from English rule. But... what was being taxed, and why?

(We were talking about this in another MR forum recently, and I'll tell you right now, it was NOT the tea tax!)

It's now 11:30am. I'll be out until 2:30 so if someone does really 'KNOW' the correct answer, please post the next question. If you're only 'guessing,' wait until I return for more clues!

Not even close, so I'll start giving some hints;
The thing being taxed was so important, it became part of a state flag! At one time, quite plentiful, but now extremely rare.

Nope. Nope. And sort of!
The Snake can be forgiven, being from NZ. But SolRaven! You're an American! We grew up with tales of the Boston Tea Party (even if they are mistaken tales about a couple of guys who threw a few pounds of tea into Boston Harbor.)
The cry of 'No Taxation Without Representation!' was crammed into us in every American History class. What was being taxed that could get us so upset?

OK... another hint;
What commodity did England so strongly rely upon for her trade with the rest of the world, so rely upon for even communicating with the rest of the world, that she would tax heavily, even cruelly, anyone who didn't handle this commodity correctly?
