Astak users and OSes

Having noticed that quite a few of our regular posters in this forum use Linux or other, non-Windows operating systems, I thought it would be interesting to conduct an informal poll to see how prevalent various OSes are in the lives of Astak users.

So, which operating systems do you use on a regular basis (at home, at work, or elsewhere)? As many people use different OSes at home and at work, multiple choices are allowed.

What can I say. I think apple and windows are decent OSes. I wish they had a "simple" OS of Linux for idiots like me to handle. But truth be told I wish there was another simple one around the corner,,,, OS that is .... not google, but a new company. Tired of the old horses.

Vista now. happy with it. I like my ereaders with linux though... impressive.

Ubuntu is designed to be an easy Linux. You can even run it off a DVD completely so you can try it without changing a thing on your hard drive.

(I don't personally recommend Ubuntu, I'm not fond of it, but it is easy to use.)

Windows is all I've ever used. Well, except in elementary school when all the old school computers were macs. I guess I'm like an old dog, and not very good at learning new tricks... or new OS's.

While Ubuntu is supposed to be easy to use, and usually is, its pretty common to run into issues which can be maddening and can't be solved without resorting to the Terminal.

While I've used it one and off for the last couple of years, trying out the new versions, the problems have stopped me from using it regularly, unlike Windows and OSX.

I've been a Linux user for 10+ years, and an Ubuntu user for the last 4. If your hardware works without issue then Ubuntu is a very very simple OS to setup and use. Since 9.04 the only time I have had to drop to the cmdline to keep my system running was to reconfigure X.org (simple command nothing complicated) to detect my new external monitor (running a laptop btw).

Best thing to do IMHO is download the LiveCD and have a play. No need to install, and you can get a good feel for it before hand.

Anyway, incase it hasn't be picked up, I am an Ubuntu Linux user. I don't use proprietary OS (except at Uni). Apples are for eating and Windows are for looking out of

Windows OS for me (XP and W7). I have tried Ubuntu Linux several times, but the learning curve puts me off. I'm so much more used to using the Windows OS.

I'm in the middle of transitioning to Win7 and currently dual-boot WinXP and Win7. I've loaded up and played with some Linux LiveCDs and even installed Ubuntu on one of my computers.. but I've wiped that computer since then. The only Linux I use regularly is the distro that comes on the EZReader Pocket Pro!

I have Vista 64 SP2 on my Desktop and XP SP3 on my netbook. I never plug the Pocket Pro into the PC though I always pop the card out and into my card reader instead.

When my old hard drive corrupted three weeks ago Ubuntu Live CD came to my rescue in saving my data before the drive failed completely. I now keep a copy just for such an emergency.

I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 soon. Vista is really irritating. However It's the most stable OS I have own. I never had any crashing like with XP and previous Windows versions but it's has several annoyances. It's slow in moving/copying files, The Search feature is horrible. I use Terracopy and XYplorer to work around this. I would never buy Vista it came with my PC.

I use Windows 7, XP, and Ubuntu 9.10 (for the occasional transfer).

As for Mac, it's based on UNIX and so is Linux. As far as easy distros go, there are quite a few, amongst them Ubuntu. Another is SuSE and from what I've heard, DreamLinux, is also pretty for the non-terminal types.

Give Puppy Linux a shot. It is very easy to use and, in my experience, is more successful than Ubuntu when dealing with hardware setup.
