Astak 9.7
Hello all!
I'm looking for an e-reader mainly for large textbook pdf support, although I would definatly appreciate html/txt support as well. If in color I would definatly want cbr/cbz (basically jpeg/png's zipped into a rar file). I heard that Astak's 9.7" model was coming out sometime in January. Is this true? I also heard it supported 16 shade's grayscale with the ability to switch to 256 color as well as wireless b/g internet access. Even if you don't know about this one can you recommend any that will have good support for those formats? (aside from an extremely expensive Irex.) Thank you! |

The E-book Reader Matrix: Larger Devices summarizes the known devices. Since the 9.7" flexiscreens from PVI are about to appear in volume, there will probably be large screen devices from all the existing EInk reader vendors by the spring. This is a same screen size as the Kindle DX, but with a plastic screen. The Astak Mentor, in the E-book Reader Matrix, is one such device, it would be from Netronix (and so also available under other names) - their EB900 (see Netronix ebook products). Note that Netronix indicates that color screens will be an option. A dark horse in the large screen reader stakes is the Pixel Qi LCD screen, which may appear on an Astak device or from other vendors. It has a low power grayscale reflective mode as well as color modes. A slate or convertible tablet using a Pixel Qi screen may be a good alternative to a dedicated large screen reading device in some cases.

Netronix
Thank you for your recommendation on the Netronix, I hadn't even heard of that brand. I really appreciate your detailed response. Any clue when I should be expecting this rush of new higher end plastic based 256 color e-readers?

Wallcraft, is the Astak Mentor Lite 2 the Netronix EB600 with an Epson controller?
I don't see anything else on that page that it could be. |

The Epson allows 8 gray scales (vs 4), and I guess the EB600 otherwise gives you low cost. |

Thanks wallcraft. At the moment, this is the one I've got my eye on. We'll see what the price is.
