Kobo Aura wont connect to wifi or pc
Hi.
I have a Kobo Aura (model N514). I use it a lot and some years ago I sideloaded a lot of ebooks unto it. Since then I have changed my wifi but I didn't bother to update the wifi settings on my Kobo because I had no use for it. Now I want to manage my library and sideload some more books. However I can't the Kobo to connect to any wi-fi at all - I have tried three different networks and carefully checked that I typed in the passwords correctly. Also I have tried connecting the Kobo to three different PCs using four different cables. The Kobo showed up on none of the PCs. I tried installing the Kobo Desktop app but it didn’t help me since the Kobo wasn’t recognized by the PC. The Kobo does charge when I plug it into a pc. This means my Kobo was updated last time back in 2019 or 2022 (I'm not sure) and it won’t show up on a pc and it won’t connect to wifi. It still works fine apart from that. What can I do to come in contact with the device again? I really wish to avoid factory resetting it and hence loose all my books, data and stats etc. I hope you can help me. Kind regards |

I'm in the same boat as you. I have several Kobos, and a few days ago none of them were able to connect to the Kobo servers, either through the Kobo desktop app or through wifi. I tried connecting one of my Minis to the desktop app after signing out of my Kobo account on the e-reader. That sent the Mini through the setup routine, which I was unable to complete due to a lack of connection. Nor was I able to "see' it on the computer. That Mini is now a brick.
I am able to download Pocket articles on an Aura H2O by signing out of Pocket, then signing back in. I have to do that each time I want to download an article. I'm afraid to try logging out of my Kobo account then logging back in because I'm concerned that I may brick another. Any help would be deeply appreciated. |

You haven't mentioned any other troubleshooting steps, so make sure you've fully rebooted both ereader and computer, and make sure you're using a known-good data cable (not just a charging cable).
After that you're probably in for a manual factory reset. |

You probably don't want to risk a factory reset until you read this thread:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=353415 Unless you're on firmware 4.35 or newer (or maybe 4.34?), you may not be able to do a factory reset anymore, as older firmwares don't support the required TLS version to communicate with Kobo's servers. You'll end up being unable to complete the setup unless you use USB with the Kobo desktop program, and of course you can't do that, either, if USB isn't working on your device. |

I tried a factory reset. That just sent me back to trying to log on to activate my Mini, but with the "connection error," I am unable to do the activation, either by wifi or by using the desktop app. Still a brick.

Someone suggested creating another account. I did so, now everything is up and running, including the formerly bricked Mini. I suspect that my previous account was deactivated, maybe because I've never purchased a book in the ten or twelve years that I've had a Kobo account.

You should just use sideload mode at this point to avoid the need for a Kobo account altogether.

I had the same concern, but I set them up via wifi. Going through the setup routine, your e-reader will search for a wifi signal. After entering your wifi password, you will be given the opportunity to create an account. Once you do that, you're set. I did this with my seven Kobos (7? Yes.) Three Minis, an Aura, an Aura H2O, a Clara HD, and a Clara 2e. Last thing to do is to log in to the desktop app with your new account. I use Pocket extensively, and I didn't have to change anything with that account.
As for side-loading, that's all I have ever done. |
