Can't start calibre
I'm unable to start calibre. Dont know why, it used to work in the past. Here's the error dump:
Python path configuration: PYTHONHOME = (not set) PYTHONPATH = (not set) program name = 'C:\Program Files\Calibre2\calibre-debug.exe' isolated = 1 environment = 0 user site = 0 import site = 1 sys._base_executable = 'C:\\Program Files\\Calibre2\\calibre-debug.exe' sys.base_prefix = '' sys.base_exec_prefix = '' sys.executable = 'C:\\Program Files\\Calibre2\\calibre-debug.exe' sys.prefix = '' sys.exec_prefix = '' sys.path = [ ] Fatal Python error: init_fs_encoding: failed to get the Python codec of the filesystem encoding Python runtime state: core initialized Traceback (most recent call last): File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 991, in _find_and_load File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 975, in _find_and_load_unlocked File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 671, in _load_unlocked File "bypy-importer.py", line 275, in exec_module File "bypy-importer.py", line 63, in get_module_code ValueError: bad marshal data (unknown type code) Any ideas how to fix this? |

I'm having a similar problem, but in converting from DOCX to Epub (I JUST updated to 5.32; usually this type of conversion works fine)
Python path configuration: PYTHONHOME = (not set) PYTHONPATH = (not set) program name = 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Calibre2\calibre-parallel.exe' isolated = 1 environment = 0 user site = 0 import site = 1 sys._base_executable = 'C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Calibre2\\calibre-parallel.exe' sys.base_prefix = '' sys.base_exec_prefix = '' sys.executable = 'C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Calibre2\\calibre-parallel.exe' sys.prefix = '' sys.exec_prefix = '' sys.path = [ ] Fatal Python error: init_fs_encoding: failed to get the Python codec of the filesystem encoding Python runtime state: core initialized Traceback (most recent call last): File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 991, in _find_and_load File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 975, in _find_and_load_unlocked File "<frozen importlib._bootstrap>", line 671, in _load_unlocked File "bypy-importer.py", line 275, in exec_module File "bypy-importer.py", line 63, in get_module_code ValueError: bad marshal data (unknown type code) |

That looks like a corrupted install. Uninstall, delete c:\program files (x86)\calibre2 and re-install

It's just annoying when someone comes in with a problem then posts that it's fixed without saying how it was fixed.

Poor procedure on my part. I didn't reboot after my install, so no doubt the path wasn't set properly. (Sorry - I've become lazy about reboots, since most installs work without them.) Works now.
Great tool, Calibre. Grateful to have it. |

I rebooted and still had a problem. I did a "repair installation" and Calibre is working right now. |

It sounds like you had Calibre running when you did the install.

What I've observed at times is that even if I do shut calibre down, and both the GUI and system tray icon have disappeared, using the sysinternal's pslist tool still shows both a calibre and calibe_parallel process still running. A pskill calibre then suffices to kill them.
I wonder if this is what's led me to occasionally have the same issue; calibre not restarting after an upgrade and requiring a repair installation. Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk |

I've had Calibre worker processes get stuck running in the background, though it's an odd enough issue that I just chalk it up to gremlins.

In my case with a slower computer, it's not that some Calibre process gets stuck, it's that it's still shutting down. Now my main computer is pretty fast with an 11th gen i7 and 16GB ram with 1TB SSD.

On Windows 7 and 10 I occasionally I have an install (calibre and others) pop a message telling me to do a restart. I ignore them and do what I normally do: Move the install from my Downloads directory to my Software directory, and start the app at my leisure.
FTR : I don't use desktop shortcuts to start programs, I use the task bar or start menu -- although I don't pretend that would make a difference, they're all shortcuts. And I never use the 'start the app now' option from an install, which means for calibre I always have to uncheck that option Ψ³ And I always install software immediately after a reboot, so for something like calibre, remnants can't have been running.
