Calibre can't read booklist from device

Hello everyone,

I've been having issues with my Kobo Aura H2O e-reader when connecting with Calibre.

First I got an error message that I couldn't remove books from the device ("Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. As calibre does not know about this updated firmware, database editing is disabled, to prevent corruption....")

It's a simular message as in the following thread:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=295238

When I first got the error, I didn't write it down. I can't give the device database and firmware version, because the device won't connect anymore.

I chose to override the check, but now calibre can't read the booklist from my device. I don't get an error, but Calibre will continue to try to read the booklist. I gave up after about an hour.

I tried updating Calibre, but that didn't help. I now use version 4.19.0
I tried using the repair option for calibre, but that didn't help either.

Any tips or ideas?

Thanks,
Josette

You can set the kobo driver to support a more recent firmware, it is safe to do it with the last firmware as stated by @davidfor here

  • Search filter in store can filter on languages.
  • Busybox has been upgraded to 1.31.1.
  • dosfstools has been updated. This should reduce the frequency that Windows reports the device file system is dirty.
  • The bug where the menu bar in kepubs displayed the wrong icon is fixed.
  • In the store, the filter in the different featured list no longer has the misleading "Featured" entry.

For calibre, there are no changes except to bump the supported firmware version. This will be in the next calibre release. Until then, it is safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option in the drivers.
Tap the Kobo icon and go to: Driver -> Configure current driver -> Metadata on device and advanced. There is the option to do it.

I used that option. The issue with reading the booklist started after that.

Did you somehow corrupt the database? Install the Kobo Utilities plugin and you can use that to check if the database is corrupt or not.

That message says the device has a later firmware version than calibre knows about. The instructions in the message are the ones to follow. calibre 4.20 should have the update.

Calibre shouldn't take an hour to connect to the device. Do the connection jobs start? Are they running all the time? If so, which ones? Or if they are not being run, is the device seen by the PC at all?

You can get the Kobo firmware version on the device by Settings- Device information (this is on older firmware).

Version of software was: 4.22.15190
Before it did read the information from the device, the only thing it didn't read was the list.

Signing out and signing back in worked. It did take almost 10 minutes, but the list was read

Thanks for the help everyone!
