Smashwords Summer Sale: July 1 - 31

Just got an email for the Smashwords Summer Sale, which will run July 1 - 31: https://www.smashwords.com/shelves/promos

For those who don't know (probably no one, but WTH), Smashwords has a couple of sales each year, where various titles are marked down anywhere from 25% to 100% with different coupons.

Smashwords has a pretty unusual selection of authors, many of whom are self-pub, but some of whom are authors who are self-re-pubbing previous conventionally published works.

It can be really hard to find things on the Smashwords site, so one trick you can use is to search this Deals forum for threads with Smashwords in the title, from past sales, and then check out the posts in the threads themselves for authors/titles that you might be interested in. Many of the same titles/authors go on sale in every sale, so if it was on sale in the past, it has a pretty good chance of being on sale again.

Oh yeah, and there are also two versions of the Smashwords interface, the one you get when clicking the link, and then another older "classic" interface, which you can get to by clicking the "Switch to Classic Interface" button about 1/2 way down the page on the left.

YMMV - I am not really fond of either...

Thanks. I've never been around when there was a Smashwords sale, so now I have the time to peruse. Already found one omnibus of a book I had 5 starred previously, so already found one!

The first four novels in the Jolie Gentil cozy mystery series, by Elaine Orr, are available in a single package. I'm not sure what to make of the pricing. If you want to buy the four books separately, they'll cost you about eight dollars, but the "Free" package doesn't seem to be related to the Summer Sale.

I think I've read eight of these so far, and they're very good. They are cozy mysteries -- straight up, with no cats or paranormal elements -- set in a small town on the (New) Jersey shore. They're good stories with good characters.

I spent a little while going through the mysteries that are free at Smashwords - some as part of the sale (i.e. with coupons), and some long-term freebies. Sadly, I only found a very few titles of interest, for me, at least. One of the nicest deals of this sale used to be the Lyn Hamilton/Lara McLintoch archaeological series, which seemed to always be part of this sale, but isn't now. Sigh!

Anyway, here are the few items I found of some note. Please note, this is not a sticky thread, so the self-pub rules are a tad relaxed, as least per this post...). So some of these are sort of iffy...I'm mostly using SYKM as my guide to non-iffy-ness, and occasionally a series or author I've read myself...

Three of the four titles in the Scott Drayco series by BV Lawson are listed in SYKM. The first looks like a long-term freebie, the others are 25% off with sale coupon.

I've read and enjoyed a couple of titles in the Bubba series by CL Bevill. The first title is a long-term freebie, and a couple of the others are reasonably priced, even though not part of the sale.

I wonder if it’s worth having a Smashwords author page thread here. As I’ve purchased titles in past sales, I’ve got a long list of favourited author pages in my account which I can quickly check out for new and discounted titles.

What do people think?

All of the Mercedes Drew Mysteries, by Barnaby Wilde, are enrolled in the sale. The first three volumes are small collections of short stories. Mercedes Drew is a motorcycle courier in London who doesn't especially like the police; Desmond Flowers is a detective on the police force. These are good, light mysteries with a bit of humor and just a hint of romance. The first book is apparently permanently free, the others are $0.99 each (50% off) during the sale. All three of these volumes are available as Mercedes Drew the Collection, which is currently $1.50 (50% off). I'd recommend going with the collection.

The fourth volume, Smile for the Camera, is a short novel. It's much more serious in tone than the rest of the serious. I didn't enjoy it as much -- I gave it 4 Stars instead of 5. It's currently $1.50 (50% off) during the sale.
