Quietly in Their Sleep, apa The Death of Faith, is the sixth in the Commissario Brunetti series by Donna Leon. I really like this series, and am sad when I look at it in SYKM and note that it doesn't have many awards/nominations - actually only one, which was, however, a Silver Dagger award, and not just a nomination. I contrast this to a series like Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series, where every book has at least one award/nomination, but which I like about the same, and wonder a bit. Anyway, as I said above, I really like the Brunetti series...

And, if you're wondering why I posted it, Quietly has dropped to $1.99, at Kindle US only, at least as of now.

Quote:
A nun has left her convent after a series of suspicious deaths: “Leon’s novels are always a pleasure.” —The Washington Post

In Venice, Italy, Commissario Guido Brunetti comes to the aid of a young Catholic sister, who has left her convent after five of her nursing home patients died unexpectedly. In the course of his inquiries, Brunetti encounters an unusual cast of characters, but discovers nothing that seems criminal. The police detective must determine whether the nun is simply creating a smoke screen to justify abandoning her vocation—or if she has stumbled onto something very real and very sinister that places her own life in imminent danger.

“Leon’s books shimmer in the grace of their setting and are warmed by the charm of their characters.” —The New York Times Book Review

Also published under the title The Death of Faith

You sold me. I'll try it. When it reaches "critical mass" on my TBR pile, I'll even read it.

The Inspector Bonaparte (Bony) series by Arthur W. Upfield was one of the earliest mystery series that I read, after discovering mysteries via, of course, Agatha Christie . I still have an almost complete set of DTB, and was eagerly waiting for this series to become available in ebook in the US. Since the series came out in the US though, sadly I've been waiting for either:

(1) titles to go on sale, since they are mostly priced at $6.99 ($5.66 at Kobo with VIP), and that is way too expensive to replace DTB, no matter how much I want to recover shelf space , or

(2) me to travel to Canada or another country where they are PD, and then download those that are available from Faded Page and other PD websites, although not many are available.

In the meantime, though, one random title in this series has dropped to $4.49 at Kindle US...still not cheap enough for me to replace a DTB, but someone else may be interested in it...that's about 35% off, which is something. It's still showing at normal price at Kobo US, at least as of now.

The Devil's Steps, #10

On special assignment with Military Intelligence, Detective-Inspector Bonaparte leaves his familiar Australian outback environment for Melbourne and a nearby mountain resort. Although out of his element with city people, Bony displays his characteristic skills to interpret some puzzling clues in the search for a wily killer...

As with many series from this time frame, the protagonist takes time from traditional mystery-solving to serve with his/her country's military. These are usually not my favorite titles in a series, but YMMV...

The book is self published, and I haven't read the author before. But it is free. And it's a police procedural, which I have a soft spot for.

Under a Raging Moon by Frank Zafiro is FREE at Amazon US.

Quote:
A violent robber is loose in River City. Meet the cops that must take him down.

Stefan Kopriva, a young hotshot. Katie MacLeod, a woman in what is still mostly a man’s world. Karl Winter, about to retire but with one more good bust left in him. And Thomas Chisolm, a former Green Beret who knows how dangerous a man like the Scarface Robber can be.

These are the patrol officers of River City – that mythical thin blue line between society and anarchy. They must stop the robber, all the while juggling divorces, love affairs, internal politics, a hostile media, vengeful gang members and a civilian population that isn’t always understanding or even grateful.

Written by a real cop with real experience, Under a Raging Moon is like a paperback ride-along. Enjoy the ride.
'River City' appears to be a stand-in for Spokane, Washington.

You can post such deals, but not in a sticky thread. Or, you can read it first and then post it here if you feel you can recommend it.

Okay. I figured it was mainly a way to keep authors or their surrogates from shilling their own works. No offense or rule breaking intended.

Honestly, I don't usually know for sure if a book is self published (though in this case the author was listed as publisher).

Just to elucidate, authors and their surrogates are expressly prohibited from posting in the Deal forum anyway. This rule is to provide some quality control, so we're not inundated with listings of absolute carp thus burying the gems. It's why there's an exception for self-published books when the poster has some concrete reason to recommend it.

An Unholy Alliance is the second in the Matthew Bartholomew series by Susanna Gregory. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GW4QD7M

Spoiler:
Quote:
For the twentieth anniversary of the Matthew Bartholomew series, Sphere is delighted to reissue the first three books with beautiful new series-style covers.

In 1350, the people of Cambridge are struggling to overcome the effects of the Black Death - and with a high mortality rate among priests and monks, the townsfolk are vulnerable to sinister cults that have sprung up.

At Michaelhouse, Matthew Bartholomew is training new physicians when the body of a friar is found in the massive chest that the University uses to store precious documents. While investigating, Bartholomew stumbles across a derelict church being used as a meeting place for the mysterious sect he believes is at the heart of a web of blackmail and deceit - with intention to overthrow the established religion.

'A first-rate treat for mystery lovers' (Historical Novels Review)

'Susanna Gregory has an extraordinary ability to conjure up a strong sense of time and place' (Choice)

Death in the Quadrangle by Eilis Dillon is a nice little 60s-era ‘murder on campus’ re-issued by Endeavour, free on Amazon (also in KU). I read all three titles (loose series) a few years ago and enjoyed.

Birds of a Feather is the second in the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. This is the last one in the series, other than very recent, that I needed, so I'm happy to see it drop to £1.90 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004HYHAVM

Spoiler:
Quote:
Jacqueline Winspear’s marvelous debut, Maisie Dobbs, won her fans from around the world and raised her intuitive, intelligent, and resourceful heroine to the ranks of literature’s favorite sleuths. Birds of a Feather, its follow-up, finds psychologist and private investigator Maisie Dobbs on another dangerously intriguing adventure in London “between the wars.” It is the spring of 1930, and Maisie has been hired to find a runaway heiress. But what seems a simple case at the outset soon becomes increasingly complicated when three of the heiress’s old friends are found dead. Is there a connection between the woman’s mysterious disappearance and the murders? Who would want to kill three seemingly respectable young women? As Maisie investigates, she discovers that the answers lie in the unforgettable agony of the Great War.
