Problems with adding of new ebooks

Used programs:
Calibre 3.5.8 (64bit, Linux)
OS Debian 9, KDE5
(all dependencies as described on the webside were satisfied)

I have problems with adding new ebooks.
As soon as I have chosen an ebook the programm stops an dies.
Nothing happens any more. No error code is shown on the display
and in the system log files no errors are listed. I can`t exit or minimize the program.
When I am importing an older database the same thing happens.

What`s going wrong?
I switched back to a version of the Debian 9 repository (calibre 2.75.1). This version
is working.

The latest release of calibre is 3.9.0. What's new.
Please do not use your distribution provided calibre package, as those are often buggy/outdated. Instead use the Binary install described below.
Do not use the repository version, uninstall all repository versions of calibe then go to https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux.

I installed calibre 3.9 as you recommended but the results are the same as described
earlier in the thread.
On a loaned Debian 8 (32bit) PC I installed calibre 3.9; there it works.
What is missing on my PC?

  1. On the pc that does not work. open calibre, create a new empty library, then try adding books to it, this works see step 2.
  2. Check the properties of your calibre library and make sure calibre has permission to read and write to it, if this does not work see step 3.
  3. Open a terminal and run calibre in debug mode try to add a book then post the result here.

Should look like this if it works correctly.

To item 1: I got the same results as described earlier
To item 2: The permissions of the database-directory are ok.
I stored my ebooks on a ntfs partition which is mounted with autofs.
The permissions were uid=0,umask=000; I changed this to uid=0,
gid=46,umask=007. The results are known
To item 3: I started calibre in debug mode and surprise, surprise the adding of ebooks
worked. B U T the next time I started calibre normaly I had my wellknown
problems.
Debug output:

I launched calibre with following command:
~$ calibre /home/parsival/Schreibtisch/laufwerk3/ArchivIII/ebooks/dan_brown/Illuminati.epub

The output was:
QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 938, resource id: 62925430, major code: 40 (TranslateCoords), minor code: 0

I tested adding of ebooks with these partitions: ext3, ext4, vfat and ntfs.
The mounting was done manually and via "autofs".
The problems occurred only with vfat and ntfs.

My home directory is on a ext4 partition. The calibre database or library is located there.
The ntfs partition is a mass storage for my pictures, ebooks and music-files.

Now I played with the command lines to find out whether they give me the possibility
to add my ebooks from the ntfs partition to the calibre database.

I searched in the KDE-menue entery the exec command and found the following:
calibre --detach %F. This command line isn't working. I don't need a --detach option
in a menue, because I have no terminal to detach. This time calibre is working without
any problems. I changed the menue entry in following file:

~/.local/share/applications/calibre-gui.desktop

I deleted --detach in this file.

Now my question: Why this time it's working (without the detach option) and why it
isn't working with --detach?

Perhaps the future calibre versions are working as well as this I changed the
calibre-gui.desktop.
