Failed to read book

Hi guys,
I admit I am a noob, please be gentle.
I am using lastest calibre on a ubuntu 17.10. machine.
My problem is I can not open e-books with pdf extension. epub&mobi etc. is no problem.

I am getting following Error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 284, in main
File "site-packages/calibre/ebooks/oeb/iterator/book.py", line 54, in extract_book
File "site-packages/calibre/ebooks/conversion/plumber.py", line 720, in __init__
ValueError: Input file must have an extension

Any guidance most appreciated.
Cheers grico

Thank you for quick answer. I did not try. All I remember is a error message stating PDF file is in a /tmp/xs455 directory. As soon I am back on my original machine I will try to open it from my original PDF-viewer, not via calibre.

It's probably an incomplete download, or similar - or something worse.

Well it looks like my system thinks calibre is my standard pdf-viewer. I changed it to evince with this command:
Code:
$ xdg-mime default evince.desktop application/pdf
Now I am trying to restore database, maybe that helps. Thank you for your support.

Something must have told your system to use calibre as the default handler for PDF files, not even Ubuntu thinks for itself

That won't overcome the 'problem'

if Preferences>Behaviour->Use internal viewer for->PDF is unchecked then calibre should start the default handler (evince) when you view a PDF.

For reasons not obvious to me I can't access that link, says page not found, even though I'm logged in there. Are you sure that URL is complete ?

Sorry for the broken link. Your advice does not work for me. Calibre does not start the default handler when you view a PDF, instead it opens E-book viewer.
And yes you are right, restoring database did not help.
But i think we can close this thread, because it is clearly a ubuntu 17.10. Artful Aardvark (development branch) problem, demonstrated in the already well known link:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/657143. Thanks for your help guys.
