ghosting
Hi,
Sorry if this is not the right thread, but could not find one with the same topic. I was disappointed with the text formatting by the current firmware (seems that it is getting worse all the time !!) so I used a patching procedure and all seemed well. A while ago I synced my device by mistake and the most recent firmware was installed. Apart from bad formatting again, the dictionary box shows terrible ghosting, as do most of the menus. Syncing again with the latest firmware did not change this. The database check with Calibre says "ok". Could this be a remnant of the former patching procedure? I thought that installing a new firmware removed the patches as well. Does anybody know how to install a firmware (and which one) before all these "features" were implemented? I just want to read without being annoyed each time by missing lines at the bottom and crowded top margins. Thanks. Jan |

The ghosting in the dictionary popup started in firmware version 3.15.0 and is still in 3.17.3. The only way to avoid it is to return to a firmware version before 3.15.0, it is not related to patching in any way.
Edit: I don't know about the formatting issues, it would help to know which firmware version you were on before and whether you are reading ePubs or KePubs. There have been some bug fixes to the hyphenation for ePubs in 3.15.0 and KePubs in 3.16.0, but apart from that I don't know of any recent changes that would affect formatting. If the patches you refer to are the Metazoa patches then they will all disappear after after a firmware update. (Edit: Although the changes to a book's settings will remain until you change them again, e.g. if you had the line spacing patch enabled and set a spacing that was narrower than could be set in the unpatched firmware, then after updating the firmware that spacing will remain for that book until you change it.) If you mean changes you made to the configuration file such as adding the FullScreenReading feature setting then those will remain after a firmware update, you'll need to edit the file again to remove them, although for FullScreenReading you can just turn off the option in the device's reading settings. Edit2: Sorry I missed that when reading your post the first time. If the formatting issues were fixed by applying a patch, then to keep them fixed you will need to apply an updated patch when you update the firmware. Last edited by GeoffR; 09-15-2015 at 06:36 AM. Thanks GeoffR,
I think I will revert to an earlier firmware first. After that I will decide whether to patch it or not. To revert, I just put the old firmware in the .Kobo directory on the reader, right? Thanks again |

The only sure way is to do a factory reset and then upgrade to the firmware version you want from here, but I have never done that (other than upgrading to the latest version) so I'm not sure of the exact details.
