Updated to 2.8.1, now SD card didn't work
Hello!
My reader, which had been running 2.1.5 perfectly fine, went nuts and required a factory restore. After downloading the newest firmware (on Aug 12, so I'm assuming it's the newest), I sideloaded my 1,088 ebooks on my microSD card, the KT rebooted and installed them all. I started reading my current ebook, but noticed that the cover wasn't displaying properly when in sleep mode. I went on vacation, used the reader, noticing that the power was decreasing quickly. I powered off and tried to power back on, hoping this would fix it. However, the powering on got stuck on the screen with the little squares to the point where I had to use the paper clip reset. This happened about 5 times. Finally I removed the sd card and it booted fine. I reinserted the sd card and it froze again. I borrowed my husband's work laptop, moved all my ebooks over to the laptop and reformatted my SD card. That didn't help, and the reader actually stopped responding at all to the computer. I did a factory reset back to my hardwired firmware (as I bought it in Aug 2011 it's old) and was able to move some books onto the reader itself. I couldn't install any newer firmware as my husband's work laptop doesn't have Kobo on it. The old firmware works pretty well, but I'm wondering what the HECK happened to the reader with this new firmware??? Has this happened to anyone else? I just got back home today, I want to finish my book before I attempt to reinstall the current firmware. However, I am SO frustrated with the Kobo that I contemplated going to Barnes and Noble and buying a Nook while on vacation and trashing the Kobo. If this is a real problem now with the Kobo I may look into a Sony. ![]() |

I thought kobo touch wasn't supposed to upgrade past 2.5.2 after kobo took down 2.6.1 and replaced it with 2.6.1b, which wasn't meant for the touch. And I'm pretty sure that was before Aug. 12.
In any case, I think the issue with your SD card is that there is a bug that makes loading the SD card info from a shut off state take a long time. But it's not actually frozen. And it should only happen when you turn on from off ![]() However, it is likely that it is not frozen and just needs a little patience to start up. It appears frozen because the little squares stop dancing, but in reality, it's still just working. The more books on the SD card, the worse. The only work around I know is to keep it in sleep mode and only turn off when desperate. It should instantly turn on from sleep mode, if this is the same issue others and myself have described. About the battery draining...do you have a cover? Does it have a pocket, or something else that could potentially touch the screen when you put your touch to sleep? That may be the issue. If you answer yes to that, you can try 1) put it to sleep 2) wait 20-30 seconds before closing the cover or putting it in its case. If no, I'm not sure. |

As an experiment, try putting a 100 books on the uSD card and see what the boot time looks like. Then up the number of books to see if the boot time gets longer. If your Touch upgraded to 2.5.2, I would suggest checking the Direct Links to Kobo Firmware thread in the Developer's Corner ( https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 ) and upgrading to 2.8.1. While not officially supported, I haven't seen any problems on a couple of old (N905, N905B) Touch ereaders running 2.8.1. If your Touch is the newer model (N905C), it may have autoupdated to 2.8.1 and you can disregard this advice otherwise follow the same process. @DNSB: From what I've been led to believe from Kobo staff, the 2.8.1 upgrade has not been pushed to any Touches.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I'm not exactly sure which firmware version is was as I reformatted at 9:30pm the night before I was going on a 2,000KM drive, I never checked the firmware version. When it got to the point where it needed to be reformatted it wasn't responding AT ALL to anything I did, so checking the firmware version wasn't possible (nor did I think of it). It was the version that was available to Canadian users of the Touch at 9:30pm August 12th. That's all I know. I did try adding about 50 books to the card after formatting it, again it (appeared) hung on powering up. I checked the light at the top of the reader during these processes, neither the blue nor green light would show. I couldn't get it to "see" the sd card after the first initial attempt to power on. When KT touch still responded to the computer I was able to access the card through the reader when it was attached to the computer, but after the KT stopped acknowledging being plugged it to the computer I couldn't access the card. The last firmware version I was using took about a minute to power on with all my books on the card, slower than the previous firmware version I used. |

I powered off/powered on the KT tonight, same problem. I let it sit to reboot for 6 minutes, it was stuck on the little squares on boot up. I removed the card, used a paperclip to reset, booted up, tried reinserting the card, froze the KT. It will not boot up with the card inside the reader, it freezes when inserted after booting up. When I added all my books to the card previously, I never powered off/powered back on.
I can't figure out what the heck is going on with it, it makes having an sd card useless. |

I had to give up on the latest proper update for my kobo touch, had the exact same problem as you have, SD card wouldn't load, had to constant insert it and remove it and insert. Before the update, ZERO problems with the card or anything else so probably teached me there that I should not have updated at all.
Things went downhill for a while, kobo was looping at the login screen and couldn't do a hardware reset but eventually managed to do it and restored it to 2.5 but I may go back to 2.4 which was working perfectly before my foolish update. Although, for the moment, 2.5 seems to react ok with my SD card. |

afaik 2.8.1 hasnt been released for the old touch (mark3) yet, but only for the newer one (mark4)
i wonder what version of the touch you guys with sd-card problems have edit: okay, i just installed 2.8.1 for mark4 on my first generation touch it seems to work fine, the first time i inserted a microsd with a few books the kobo froze and i had to reset it, the second time it worked and i can access the books. edit2: yepp, okay, after a few minutes doing nothing the kobo froze again. so i guess your problem actually really IS using mark4-firmware on an older mark3-device Last edited by Cyphox; 09-08-2013 at 12:50 PM. |

I had to reboot as there were fonts I wanted to load, and it seems that you must power off/ power on to get them to register. It's nice(?) to know i"m not the only one having odd issues with the sd card. |

My husband is pushing me towards the Kindle Paperwhite, and I have to say I am seriously considering it, along with the Sony T2/T3. |
