Power Management Didn't Work

Hi! Just got a brand new PRS-600 yesterday, fully charged it then purchased (10) books and finally started reading one last night.

This morning it was dead...no charge. However I didn't turn it off last night after I was finished reading...I just left it on, displaying the last page I read. Total time on, after full charge, and 'til this morning when I went to read some more was ~ (10) hours.

The Power Management is set to "On"...which (per instructions) should have turned the reader off after (60) mins of no activity.

Any ideas? Is it normal for complete discharge after (10) hours of just displaying one page?

I understand that the electronics controlling the Touch Functions must be on and using power during this period but I am a bit surprised that they would use enough power to completely drain the unit in this time.

I'm interested in what other PRS-600 owners do...do you turn completely off at end of reading session or let the Power Management turn it off for you?

Thanks in advance...

It can take a couple of charge/discharge cycles to calibrate the battery meter. Fully charge it again, and see what happens. It should certainly last a LOT longer than 10h.

Complete charge/discharge, I'd like to add

If you want to gain reading time, you can get a psp charger/cable and use the yellow barrel-like tip to charge the Reader (not attaching it to a computer, if it's just a cable- any usb charger will work). It won't "block" the screen, and you can use it while it's plugged in. PSP chargers and cables can be very cheap too- have a look on eBay if you have time.

HarryT, do you know if the touch screen consumes a lot of energy or influences the battery drainage if the Reader is left on? Thank you

Thanks for the quick responses...couple of questions though:

1. Should I turn the -600 off when done reading?

2. Any idea why the Power Management didn't work?

3. I tried using USB wall adapter this morning but it didn't recharge the -600 so I had to recharge with laptop. Am I understanding correctly that PSP charger will work on -600?

Thanks again...

The touch screen itself doesn't use any power if you don't use it. Making heavy use of annotation, however, definitely does drain the battery a lot more quickly than just reading does. I make extensive use of annotation to "mark up" books when I'm proof-reading them, and find that two or three hours of doing that will generally drain the battery by 1 "bar" - something which would take much, much longer if I were just reading.

"Turning off" the machine does nothing except blank the screen and lock most of the buttons, so it shouldn't affect power consumption whether or not you choose to do this. I'd guess that in your case, because the power meter wasn't yet calibrated, the battery wasn't really very fully charged at all.

You can't charge from a USB wall socket, only from a PC's USB socket. Yes, a PSP charger will work fine.

1) I also got a PRS-600 this weekend, when i opened it it had 2 on the battery-meeter, but it quickly dropped to one. I plugged it into the computer and charged it until the red light went off, that was night to sunday, now the meeter is still fully charged on my unit.

I do put my reader into sleep when dropping it in my bag, to prevent random key-presses.

Also I did play with mp3 a couple of days ago, and the audio file is still paused. So I conclude that it doesn't drain the battery when paused (I read a comment that it did elsewhere in this forum).

Note: The drain/recharge cycle I've read is folklore with current battery technology.

2) No idea.

3) I've read in this forum that other people use the psp adapter.

Offtopic: I've read elsewhere in this forum that you couldn't name the bookmarks on the PRS-600, but if you tripple-tap in the upper right corner the name of the bookmark is the first sentence in the note.

You don't need to drain and charge the battery for the sake of the battery, but for the power gauge on the Reader. It doesn't calibrate itself correctly until the battery's gone through a couple of charge/discharge cycles.

Just wanted to update everyone since you were kind enough to leave suggestions...after recharging for second time, I have a fully functional PRS-600 now.

At ~700 page turns, I am down to 1 bar on power meter. I am both very impressed and quite satisfied with this unit. I read recent article about new readers coming out, including new Sony readers with wireless capability, but I am quite happy that I didn't wait.

I was a bit frantic after the initial problem as I bought the unit in China (Beijing) and it isn't easy getting either service or exchanges here.

Again thanks to all for helping me on this...
