Well.. my second Kindle has died... suggestions?

My Kindle died. Second one to die in the same way (cracks on screen, doesn't change). Had it for 2 years.

Anyway, I definitely need an e-reader, but I'm not 100% sure I necessarily want to buy another kindle because...

1. 90% of my books are not purchased from amazon

and

2. those that are, I've DRM stripped and stored in my calibre already

I use my e-reader for reading comic-books too, so resolution is a big deal when choosing my next one. Greater than 800x600 would be a plus.

I already have a tablet, so I don't see that as an alternative.

With that in mind, is there a "better"choice, or do I just buy a third kindle?

Well, if you really want higher resolution, I think your only mainstream options are Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Aura?

If you don't mind 800x600 and want one cheaply so when it breaks you don't feel bad, Best Buy is selling Nook Single Touches for $50. NST has an SD card slot for extra storage and can be rooted for more format compatibility, so that may be a plus depending on your needs.

I have a large Kindle Fire, which I got just because I got hooked on the Walking Dead comic books. I have a PW as well, but the white on black large Fire at night is my favorite. Deliberately didn't set up email, and leave the apps to my Samsung Tab.

The Aura HD might be worth a look. Slightly larger screen with higher resolution 1440x1080 [265ppi] (the screen is excellent).

Kindles dont handle comics as well as ereaders that handle epubs. They do it, but you have to jump through extra conversion hoops. With an epub capable ereader, you just dump them into calibre and convert to epub.

Nook STR is dirt cheap at the moment. At the other end, the the Kobo Aura has a bigger screen and good lighting tech. I think they support epub. If lighting is an issue to you, be aware that the Kobo tech is the best. Don't touch the Nook Glo as the lighting system is flawed.

As far as I can tell, all the lighting systems have a chance to show up flawed. I've seen equal complaints about screen lighting on the Kobos, Nooks, and Kindles, so I don't think there's anything to choose between really. They're all using the same basic technology.

If you go for a lighted eReader, just be aware you might need multiple returns to get one that looks good with the light on.

I don't know if you've been using a cover or not but it not, I would highly suggest purchasing and using one. I have covers on all my Kindles (and I have them all) and have never had a cracked screen (even on my Kindle 1). I toss them into backpacks and purses all the time and have never had damage (I've even sat on them accidentally a time or two).

Whichever reader you go for, get a good cover for it. :-)

Care to expand on the problems with the Kobo lighting system?

No they don't.

Not for the Kobo AFAIK.

The Kobo Aura HD looks like a good buy at the moment for your purposes (large, high-res screen).

The problem of glass substrates seems likely to be with us for a few more years yet. There is the Wexler that has a non-glass screen, but it's not high-res.

Sony and e-ink have developed a plastic-substrate screen which is going into mass-production soon. Not there yet though. Sony have a very big prototype slate using it.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions guys.

I do actually use a case, the official lighted case, though that doesn't protect the kindle as much as I would like. I don't resent the breakage all that much, e-readers are very inexpensive relative to the use I get out of them.

I think the Aura HD is the correct choice for me, it seems to fit the bill beautifully. Though I might need to change my habit of chucking my kindle into my bag without a care for what else ends up knocking it or on top of it...

Cheers.

Deep down we all know Kobo is where it's at.

But really, like others said the Aura or Glo are great choices.
