Hi.
Have been hunting here for an answer to this question but haven't been able to find what I am wanting to know.

I have just upgraded my Kindle Keyboard to a Kindle Paperwhite.
With my Kindle Keyboard, if I transferred files from Calibre they would appear in my device in the same order. I keep them indexed by Author then Publishing Date.

With my Paperwhite they will appear indexed by Author and are then are seemingly randomly assigned. (Does not correspond with 'date' order either)

How do I remedy this?

So ... I can see how to use the "Save Template" to change Folder Names etc when sending files to the Paperwhite. {pubdate} doesn't appear to work though. (from Plugin Setup)
This will only change the folder names in my device won't it? Will this also have the effect of re-ordering the titles if the pubdate came first?

Or ...
will I simply have to re-title all my books by prefixing the titles with a number?

You probably just need to change the sorting on your PW, it likely has options ot control how the book list it displays is sorted.

Thanks, but the only sort options in the Paper white are Recent, Title and Author.
This is the same as was in my Kindle keyboard.
If sorting by Author (KK) items were also listed by pub date, presumably because that's how they were sorted in Calibre when transferred?
With the PW under Author they are random.

So I guess nothing has changed in Calibre regarding the order the books are transferred? Must just be a PW thing then.
Looks like I'll have to rename everything to get around it.

Instead of renaming everything try using the metadata plugboards. Note that the metadata plugboards do not work for books converted with the Mobi output - MOBI file type set to both.

That works really well, but only if I edit all the publishing dates to the same month.

Possibly. Preferences - Tweaks and adjust the below tweak.

# Control how dates are displayed

gui_pubdate_display_format = 'yyyy mm'

This may have zero effect on the Pub date being sent to your PW but it is worth a try.

Now I have my Paperwhite Book list looking like this, without editing the books themselves.

Tana French - 2007 - In The Woods
Tana French - 2008 - The Likeness
Tana French - 2010 - Faithful Place
Tana French - 2012 - Broken Harbour
etc

This makes a huge difference to me

Calibre is such a great program and the support here is fantastic. (and yes I have donated previousy, and will do so again)
