Feature Request: number of selected items

Hi,
when I select a large group of items it would be good the have somewhere in the GUI the number of item selected.

Could you please add this feature ?

I have been wanting this for quite a while, just did not want to take away from more exotic improvements

It opens up the opportunity for a couple of other, IMO desirable, minor adjustments.

Can the counters next to the Virtual Library button ever differ from those shown in the status line (apart from 'all books')?

If not, then could the VL button be stretched to occupy the space and have the name of the current Virtual Library - eg VL: Crime
Could the counter on the Library button be replaced by the name of the current 'Real' Library?

I really appreciate all the recent usability changes.

Last weeks cell highlighting plus this weeks clear and set dates with '-' and '=' means that I can do things in the book list spreadsheet that I was doing in Edit Metadata dialogue.

FYI, The real library name followed by the virtual library name is in the top bar.

Thanks Doc, I had noticed that - but if you use a dark colour scheme like I do then its not that easy to read stuff in the title bar - oh, I see you use the same colour scheme as I do

I also 'worry' about having similar information displayed in different places - if they should become disparate for some unforeseen reason then...

The main function of the numbers next to the VL button is to indicate, clearly and in a hard to miss manner that you are in a VL or not.

Wouldn't a Virtual Library name in bold italics on a wider button do that equally well.
For the record, my suggestion for title & status bars would be something like

Code:

Title  : calibre version nn.nn.nn [nn bit] created by Kovid Goyal
Status : <library> (nnn,nnn) || <virtual> (nnn,nnn) || Search: nnn,nnn || Selected nnn.nnn

If you find the title bar on your system hard to read, the answer is to change the colorscheme/theme your desktop uses, not get every application to stop using the titlebar to display useful information.

My suggestion had nothing to do with readability.

It was motivated by a desire to 'gather' the variable information together in one place and in the place where I find most applications put it - in the status bar.

The title bar can and is written to by 3rd party applications. I use a couple, calibre along almost all other apps is oblivious to their existence. See attachment, normally the extra buttons you see are next to the standard close/max/min buttons, I moved them to left illustrate my point.

My partner runs a clock and timer app in her title bar on her mac - she's a lawyer and charges by the millisecond :lol:

Anyway it was just a suggestion - not a request.
