Can you scan the iLiad screen?!
Sooner or later this was sure to come up, but nobody seems to have asked the question. Probably because it hasn't been a practical issue yet. But as I'm impatient and curious, I'll throw it out myself...
Can e-ink displays be scanned like paper books can be scanned? |

Yes, I put my iLiad on a photocopy machine and got very good results! The only "drawback" currently is, that the iLiad has no keylock, so very often by putting the iLiad on the machine, some keys are pressed

It makes an interesting bypass of DRM!

I think it would be pretty easy to circumvent then:
Can't help myself, but everytime I think about it somehow I like the idea of eInk more and more. ![]() |

A nice easy way of circumventing DRM is setting the scanner to scan iLiads screen size then using an OCR'ing software to extract the text from it;

Please anybody can scan screen of iLiad at 600 DPI or 1200 DPI and show small crop. I'm interested to see internal structure of eink display.

When DRM appears it will probably not be a very attractive way of extracting text contents. 170 dpi makes for rather noisy scans -- and that will give rather noisy OCR results. You'll have to do quite a lot of editing to get the same text quality as the original file had. There are usually better ways -- if it's a popular novel, buy a paperback, cut the back off, scan the pages at 450 dpi or so, and the number of transcription errors will be much lower. You *still* have to proofread if you want the text quality of the original. (As you explicitly say 'extract the text' I'm ignoring using page scans immediately.) And even then, you may have to tweak the text to the format you want it in. At that point the benefit of having the text better outweigh the pain and effort you have to spend to get at it. |

The pixels per inch of the e-ink panel don't adequately describe the perfection of its ability to display text glyphs.
The e-ink panel is much better than what you get with the cheap printing on even cheaper paper of a mass market pot boiler novel. It is at least as high a quality as a good clay coated paper on a good quality German or Japanese press. I suspect it would make an excellent target on my copy stand. ![]() |
