iLiad V2 screen
Is the iLiad V2 screen Vizplex? Or is it still the first generation screen?
Thanks, BOb |

It is a first generation screen. I don't see much difference between it and the Kindles (smaller) Vizplex screen, particularly since the iLiad has 16 greyscales. New page times are longer though. You might be interested in the i to i blog post: What makes our electronic paper displays different?.

In the coming weeks we will compare the display performance of the current iLiad with a Vizplex™ prototype and analyze the differences. So stay tuned. Did they ever post that comparison? BOb |

I don't remember seeing it. I have seen technical specs comparing the iLiad's screen with the vizplex. The vizplex is basically slightly brighter (aka more reflective) and has a faster refresh rate, but the iLiad's screen has a slightly better contrast.
I don't really think of the iLiad's screen as being the same as the other first generation eInk screens. It's kind of a hybrid between the first generation and their own custom development. There's more of a difference between a vizplex and first generation screen than there is between a vizplex and the current iLiad screen. |

VizPlex screens are currently only available in the 6" size. The iLiad uses a standard 1st Gen PVI screen, but with a custom display controller, which is why it displays 16 grey-scales compared with the 4 grey-scales of other 1st gen screens.

I have a prs505 and an iLiad v2 and about the only noticeable difference, other than more gray levels, is the faster refresh on the viziplex. The iLiad does seem to have better contrast, but that could also be related to different fonts etc showing more boldness.
I think my perfect ereader would be the iliad screen size and gray levels with the faster viziplex refresh rates, the sony thickness/thinness and the kindle wireless functions. I wonder how long I'll have to wait? |

A minor point is that the iLiad, like other 1st gen devices, does suffer somewhat from ghosting, which the VizPlex screens are relatively immune to. This appears to be something which happens at the individual machine level - some have it to a much greater extent than others.
I agree with the viewpoint that the iLiad has a much better display than the other 1st-gen screen devices. VizPlex screens have a rather lighter-coloured background, however, which does improve the contrast. |

From what I've heard, this tends to vary by device as well. The specs I've seen are that the iLiad has an 8:1 contrast and vizplex has a 7:1 contrast. So, technically, the iLiad should be slightly better. The vizplex has a slightly higher brightness though (a couple percentage points), which is talking about how much light is reflected by the screen. Maybe what you're seeing is a better brightness, rather than a better contrast.

Since Q2 we implemented the Vizplex material into our 8.1-inch display, but the improvements are only very minor. |

That would be pretty big news, if they are. I assume there would have been a big announcement if they started shipping units with vizplex. It's possible that they quietly slipped it in, but I'd be surprised that they didn't make a big press release out of it.

If Karel, who is in the best position to know, reckons that the improvement is "very minor", why would there be a "big announcement"?

I was thinking just for marketing purposes. Whether or not switching to Vizplex made a big improvement, if they really did switch I assume they'd want to advertise it.

They should be congratulated for not making a big deal over something which a customer won't notice. There's all too few companies with the honesty to do that.
