Problems with Kindle collections

I have long had two separate problems with collections on my Kindle E Ink readers. If anyone can offer a solution to either (or both), I'd be very grateful.

1. Assigning books to collections

I assign fiction books to collections on the basis of their status. Books therefore get moved from Unread to Partly read and then to Read (or Abandoned) as I read them. However, there are some - about 450 - that refuse to stay in the Read collection. I assign them to it, but they then get moved out next time I synchronise. This seems to happen whether or not the device is connected to Wi-Fi at the time I assign the books to that collection. These are all books that I read several years ago: I haven't noticed this problem with books that I've read in recent years. As a workaround, I've created another collection (called Finished), and assigned to books in question to it. They stay there, but it's rather inelegant to have two collections that serve the same purpose. I find the need for it incomprehensible.

2. Library tab

The Library tab is set to sort by title ascending, and to show collections in list view. In Settings/Home and Library/Library tab, I have Group series turned off, Collections set to "Show favourites" and Audible set to "Show only when filtered" (in any case, I don't have any Audible books). So why do collections that are not marked as favourites appear in the Library view?

I think Kindle Collections has been a bit broken for years. It gets more broken if you sync two very different kinds of eink ereaders.

It was a shame when they made it that a PC can't set them.

It's wrong that they are mostly disabled if an ereader is unregistered.

Kindles are crippled by Amazon's excessive attempt to make them "Cloud Clients" under Amazon control. See particularly series metadata and the annotations of PDFs on the Scribe.

Later GUIs seem to progressively make the Library view more confusing and awkward. Also on the PW3 I have to now enable Whispernet (spyware?) to be able to get newly purchased books. The Send to Device only seems to work on models with no so called Whispernet.

I'll keep my existing Kindles for the odd ebook I want only on Amazon, but I won't buy another. I'll just use an app in the future (when the Kindles are dead) on the rare case I have to have an exclusive Amazon title.

So it's not just me, then? That's useful knowledge. Thank you. (And yes, I've long been trying to synchronise different models - at various times, I've owned the Touch, Paperwhites of at least two different generations, Voyage, Oasis and a basic Kindle.)

It's not just the Library view. IMO, the whole UI - especially the Home screen - has been getting progressively worse since I got my first (a Touch) in 2012. It's got so bad that I've little used mine for several years.

Like you, I now buy everything except Amazon-only titles elsewhere. It just happens that I'm reading a space opera from an indie author who only publishes through Amazon at the moment. I could, and probably should, convert and transfer it to one of my other devices. I just haven't yet done so.

Yes. it's all ghastly.

The DXG & K3 are now less confusing than the last PaperWhite 3 GUI. I have another PW3 that didn't get updated as far.

Eventually managed to boot the K3 today, so looks like it is the dodgy battery. Unfortunately has two serial data connections, so bodging some random cell won't work. I ordered one after confirming that it gets azw3. It seems to work. differently to PW3 or DXG to get ebooks from Amazon. Also some Amazon delivered ebooks don't have Publisher option on K3, even though azw3 and it renders like a mobi. Possibly without at least on embedded font there is no azw3/KF8 rendering? Still, it can't get KFX and the azw3 that looked like a mobi, was perfect in Calibre.
