Unhappy independent jpg files when transferring books

Hey everyone!

I'm new to ereaders, ebooks, calibre and all of this. I started using calibre this week and love it. Worked great, loved polishing up a bunch of books I torrented. I saved them all only in epub format because that's my preference. I noticed when they all transferred to my ereader that along with the epub files, a separate jpg got downloaded there too for each book. I was able to just manually delete them and the epub files open and work fine. But I was wondering how I can avoid this in the future? I'm thinking of just individually going through the ereader when it's plugged into my laptop and deleting the jpg files? Or is there a more efficient way of fixing this? My biggest concern is doing something that'll mess up the books because I'm downloading a lot of books to build up my ereader library, and I don't want to go through all of the work and realize I messed up and have to do it all over again.

I appreciate any suggestions and help! Thank you

Just a fair warning. People around here are quick to assume torrenting means stealing. You’ll get grief if you don’t clarify that you’re torrenting public domain releases, etc.

As for your question, I’ve never noticed Calibre doing that, and I’ve used it for years. What computer platform are you using? What version of Calibre? How did you transfer the books? Within Calibre or manually from Calibre’s library directories? A bit more info here will help us identify the problem you’re running into, though some of the Calibre Gnostics around here will have several guesses for you with what you’ve already typed up.

What computer platform are you using? Windows 11. What version of Calibre? 7.10.0. How did you transfer the books? Within Calibre or manually from Calibre’s library directories? Manually from library directories.

I hope this helps? I did notice that in the local saved files, it showed epub and jpg as separate files so, so not sure why they saved separately.

The torrented books are public domain stuff, it's basically the classics type of books. I found calibre because I wanted to change the metadata like the covers and little blurbs to them, to my own liking.

Why do it this way? It's easier to transfer the books from within Calibre. You'll get no redundant files then.

Edit: Calibre is built in such a way that everything should be done via its GUI or command line. Nothing should be done directly with the files in the library directory. Don't touch the files in the directory. Don't even go there. If you start to copy, paste, rename, add or delete things in the library directory, not in the Calibre GUI, you'll mess your library up very quickly, and possibly irreparably.

Forget your torrent. Have a look at the public domain books in the library here. You can get eBooks that do not need metadata updating.

Thanks for saying something. I was late in getting back to the thread. Manually side loading from the Calibre directories is likely causing the problem.

I would recommend manually removing the problem books from the Kobo to make sure to get those redundant files. You likely don’t need to reset/wipe the device. Then use Calibre to transfer the books back. Calibre does a nice job of neatly sorting books onto the Kobo.

It might not be necessary, but I would power cycle my Kobo, then run a repair on the database (More>Device Info>Repair) just to be safe. You could also use Calibre’s Kobo Tools plugin to check the database for errors. Again, it’s probably not necessary, but I’ve developed some paranoid habits due to database error headaches from a bad firmware a few years back. 😅

If you delete eBooks with calibre instead of the the device's delete function, you'll delete excess files and directories.

But he copied them over manually. So he should remove them manually. Are you saying that Calibre is savvy enough to clean up after a manual sideload? I mean, maybe it is, but I haven’t heard that before.

Then he'll just have to use calibre to side-load and then delete.
