The first room-temperature superconductor has been created!

OK, it's a bit of a chilly room, but still!

Unfortunately, it's not at room pressure. It transitions at 287.7 kelvin (14.55C) at 267 gigapascals (2.6 million atmospheres).

But it's still a marvellous achievement, and will almost certainly lead to greater understanding of the physics of superconductivity.

And with a bit of luck, it may even lead to room temperature superconductors that don't need to be kept in a diamond anvil.

Well, clearly not.

But the fact that one exists at all means that the existence of a practical one is now much more likely.
