Kindle Firmware 5.8.9.2

I don't know the difference from the 5.8.9

Ragged Right Alignment: You can now read using left-aligned (ragged right) text instead of justified (aligned on both left and right margin). This new alignment option can be selected from the Display Settings (Aa) menu within Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting. On the Kindle eBook Store page, look for "Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled" in the features list.

Faster Highlighting: You can now touch and drag to make a highlight more quickly. Tap the highlight again to edit or delete it.

Advanced manga page turn controls: You can now drag left and right to adjust speed and direction when using the fast continuous page turn feature while reading manga.

Preview manga double page spreads: You’ll now see a preview of double page spreads at the bottom of the page while reading manga. Tap the preview to see a full landscape view of the spread, and tap again to close it.

Crop margins in manga: You can now remove blank margins from manga pages for a closer view of the content. Enable this option from the Display Settings (Aa) menu within manga books.

All of which was included in the 5.8.9 description, none of that is specific to the 5.8.9.2 version.

Are you asking or trying to list the differences?

Amazon did not change the description for the release of 5.8.9.2
That is the 5.8.9 description you copied.

Can you find anything that has changed on your device since you installed 5.8.9.2?
Any changes to collection handling for instance?

I feel a bit snappier using 5.8.9.2 compared to 5.8.9.0. I installed in Oasis. It might be only me...

Received by Linux using a whole lot of things.
(why do people not disable the advertisement on their text application?)

That could also be because the device was restarted. *
The apparent response speed has been reported to seem higher following a restart.
This could also be placebo effect at work.

* The last action of an upgrade is a restart.

My screensaver hack no longer works after this update.

It stopped working when 5.8.9 was installed but I was able to get it back up by reinstalling the hack.

But when 5.8.9.2 was installed, the hack was disabled again. At this point, I think I'm going to give up on the screensaver hack. It's nice, but not worth it if I have to go through the installation dance every time Amazon pushes an update.

Yes, you have to dance after every update.

If you are (or where) using our screensaver add-in, then your Kindle must be jail broken.

There is a very easy way to control (prevent) Amazon from pushing an update to your device described in Step #7 of the jail break instructions.

= = = =

There was a discussion last year at about the time of the current jail break release about making other of our add-ins 'bridge' the update.

The bottom line was:
Technically possible but not practical.

Note: there is one thing (often missed) that reduces the pain level:
The Mobileread Installer (MrPI) is a batch mode installer.
You can put all desired update_*.bin name format packages in /mrpackages and only have to trigger MrPI once.
Unlike the Amazon updater, it can handle an entire batch of packages at the same time.

One thing I do is keep a copy of all the update files I use in a directory on the kindle (NOT /mrpackages) and then when I need to reinstall I just copy them over to /mrpackages...no need to find wherever you stored them on your computer.

Now you're talking about me, huh?! That's the very same way I've used for years now. I also keep backup copies of other reader app files (e.g. Vlasovsoft tools and KOReader) as archive files in a /files/ directory in the user-visible root (besides /documents/ ) in the case I must do a clean reinstall. The only thing I then have access to, is another computer (Linux, Windoze, doesn't matter... ) and an USB cable.

Perhaps there would be a way to auto-reinstall all of those add-ins from a user maintained set of back-up copies.
With a few restrictions that where not considered last time, it might be made practical.

Don't anyone hold their breath -
we have a serious shortage of "coders" at our sub-forum.
