Ward Against Death by Melanie Card (ISFDB) is the 1st in her Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer series of YA (some reviews say closer to New Adult) paranormal fantasy mystery adventures with strong f/m romantic elements starring the series titular necromancer and his eventual raised-from-the-dead girlfriend, this installment getting them together as Ward must work together with the resurrected Celia to solve what she's convinced is her own murder, free courtesy of publisher Pan Macmillan's Entangled: Teen imprint.
Although the Entangled line is primarily for romance-oriented books, this series follows the same characters throughout their ongoing adventures (rather than switching couples while maintaining the same setting as is common in more dedicated-romance series), and customer reviews praise the strong mystery and action elements. YMMV. Currently free @ B&N (also UK, and beware if buying from device since there's another non-free version in their listings), Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), Kobo & iTunes & Google Play (all available to Canadians, and iTunes is another place that has a non-free version you should be wary of buying directly from device). And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat free ebook thread of the day. A bit by default, but it gets bonus points for being sfnal and mysterious (I freely admit to being a sucker for genre crossovers), and it's nice to get a bit more variety in the professions that paranormal types get involved in. And I must admit, solving your own murder sounds awesome. ![]() Enjoy! Description Twenty-year-old Ward de'Ath expected this to be a simple job-bring a nobleman's daughter back from the dead for fifteen minutes, let her family say good-bye, and launch his fledgling career as a necromancer. Goddess knows he can't be a surgeon-the Quayestri already branded him a criminal for trying-so bringing people back from the dead it is. But when Ward wakes the beautiful Celia Carlyle, he gets more than he bargained for. Insistent that she's been murdered, Celia begs Ward to keep her alive and help her find justice. By the time she drags him out her bedroom window and into the sewers, Ward can't bring himself to break his damned physician's Oath and desert her. However, nothing is as it seems-including Celia. One second, she's treating Ward like sewage, the next she's kissing him. And for a nobleman's daughter, she sure has a lot of enemies. If he could just convince his heart to give up on the infuriating beauty, he might get out of this alive... Last edited by ATDrake; 09-14-2015 at 05:49 PM. |
