How not to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Some devices that plug into the USB to be accessed by the computer no longer work after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is installed. Devices like Kobo, Apple, Kindle, and others do not proper work. So if you do not want to update your working Windows 10 to the not working Anniversary Update, follow the directions below.
The best way to prevent your Windows 10 system from installing the Anniversary Update is to turn off the Windows Update service. To do that... 1. Hit Win+R on the keyboard 2. Type services.msc in the box 3. Find Windows Update in the list of services 4. Click on it and change the service from manual to disabled 5. Reboot Do not enable the service until we are sure that the Anniversary Update is working properly with USB devices |

One MR user appears to have reported having a problem with the Kobo, Jon. A general statement that many devices fail to work appears to be a somewhat exaggerated claim. Can you provide some links to support it, other than the one thread in the Calibre devices subforum in which the one user has reported a Kobo issue?

There may be many reasons why USB-devices stop working.
Windows keeps a list of every device that ever connected to the computer, to which port, which driver it used, and (if applicable) which drive letter it had. I once helped a music store owner to sort out his laptop because no USB-device was working anymore. I found out that he had hundreds and hundreds of entries in the list, with many messed up drivers, because over the years, he had hundreds of piano's, keyboards and organs connected to that laptop for things such as firmware updates. I removed every device driver that had anything to do with USB (including the mouse), and cleared the list. After rebooting the laptop, everything worked again (after driver re-install, where necessary). The list can be viewed and cleared with USBDeView by NirSoft. It can diagnose and fix many problems/conflicts by removing problematic drivers and entries. Use this at your own risk. Last edited by Katsunami; 08-03-2016 at 07:59 AM. |

There is another Windows 10 computer that eventually will update to the Anniversary edition that I could try my Kobo on and see if it works.

I've upgraded my laptop yesterday. I haven't seen anything wrong with my USB-stick when I used it, but I'll connect the Kindle and my X-Rite EyeOne display calibrator to see if they still work.

Thanks, David. No reports in the Kindle or Apple forums that I can see, so perhaps it's a Kobo-specific issue?

That depends on how many MR users have updated to the Anniversary edition and also have tried their Reader(s).
I'm waiting until I can be more sure of being able to use my Kobo with my laptop. |

NO problem with win10 anniversery on my devices, Fire HDX 8.9, Samsung Tab Pro 8.4, Nexus 7 (2013), or LG G Pad II 10.1.
However, the Fire & LG tablets work as usual in that not only the tablets are "seen" by win10 but the tablets are accessible from the win10; the Fire & LG are still in "lollipop" mode. Both the Nexus & Samsung are running marshmallow with the Tab Pro using CWM version. There is a bug with marshmallow where the usb port is switched to charging when connected via usb even if the device's setting is at mtp; the "fix" is to change the setting to charging then back to mtp; then the computer will not only "see" the tablet, but able to access the data in the tablet. It is a knowm bug ever since marshmallow came out & happens each time the os is updated. Oh, yes the setting is under the developer options. Don't know if the iphone has the same problem as i avoid istupid products; even if I have a Mac Mini. Last edited by crane3; 08-03-2016 at 01:10 PM. Reason: mis-spell: known bug |

I'd be very surprised if there were to be a widespread problem with iPhone/iPad. They are such popular products that they must surely have been tested!

![]() Multiple reports implies it must be something Kobo-specific, though I cannot imagine how MS would mess something like that up. In other words, as usual JSWolf has gotten something partially correct, and blown it all out of proportion. Perhaps, on par with his usual observed anti-Kindle partisan tendencies, he is trying (consciously or subconsciously) to create a local mindset that Kindles have this problem, in order to counter the upcoming bad press for Kobo products if this doesn't get fixed really soon? I can't think of another logical explanation for why he is specifically calling out the Kindle despite the problem reports specifically calling out the Kobo. |

My Kobo isn't recognized either (but neither is my Garmin GPS) on my tablet. Kobo does recognize it's connected to a PC, but on the PC side, nothing happens. I've never connected my H2O to Windows 10 before (my main PC is Windows 7 and I only recently updated this tablet to Windows 10), so I've no idea if anything changed since the anniversary update. I only know that both my Garmin and my Kobo worked in Windows 8.1. I didn't do a fresh install, only an update.

One of the threads it was mentioned that some Kindles also had problems with the Win 10 Anniversary beta. I have no idea if that's true with with the release version. But it's better to be safe. I've read of some external hard drives not being properly recognized.
I have no idea what's up with the Anniversary update. But I'd rather not update until I know what's going on. |
