The Flirt by mystery author pseudonym M. C. Beaton aka Marion Chesney (SYKM, Wikipedia), of Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series fame, is the 1st in her Regency Intrigue series of originally standalone historical f/m romantic suspense novels with strong mystery and intrigue elements now grouped into an easy marketing package for the Heyer-reading demographic, this installment involving a young woman who believes herself an orphaned poor relation who must catch a husband to escape an unhappy family situation, only to find out that she may have an unexpected inheritance coming to her, if she can survive her loving relatives, free courtesy of publisher RosettaBooks, who are e-printing it from its original 1985 edition under her original name.
This appears to be their annual Valentine’s Day Countdown special selection for Feb 3rd, though it’s rather hard to tell since unlike previous years, they’ve haven’t put up an announcement on their website or in their blog. Currently free, probably just for today (Feb 3rd) @ Amazon (available to Canadians and should also be free almost every other place Amazon sells worldwide, except in the UK where the rights are held by a different publisher, since RosettaBooks is doing this through the KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat… ish) free ebook thread of the day. Because it's always nifty whenever a publisher decides to make a regular event of a holiday giveaway, even if they don't bother telling anyone about it sometimes. And bonus points for giving us a middling-obscure-ish backlist title by an author who's very popular in two genres, that her fans of her better-known titles may have been wondering whether or not to take a chance on, and now they get to try it for free. ![]() Enjoy! Description Tongues were set wagging when Elizabeth Markham’s glamorous young parents were killed, leaving their only child to the unspeakable class of poor relation. Forced to live with her cruel, miserly uncle Julius, Elizabeth was forbidden to participate in the season’s festivities. Elizabeth realized that marriage was her only escape, and she decided on a daring plan: she would trick her way into the Duke of Dunster’s exclusive house party and snare one of the eligible bachelors sure to be happy to dance with her. Elizabeth’s plan succeeded swimmingly, as she flirted with everyone with the exception of the arrogant Lord Charles Lufford, who was considered by those in the know to be quite a catch. She ignored Charles thoroughly until her uncle discovered her deception and it was, of all people, Charles who saved her - by announcing their engagement! But Elizabeth’s troubles were far from over. In her absence she had come into an inheritance and her uncle, along with another sinister party, would rather see her dead than receive. |
