Several of the customer reviews indicate that this has a decided emphasis on depicting the darker underside of underprivileged 18th century life, calling it nearly gothic in tone, and was considerably grittier than they thought it would be. But they note that the romance portions are "clean" and that it's rather faith-affirming.
