Can I move titles from Kindle to Calibre?
I apologise in advance if this question is far too basic or if it's in the wrong place. (If the latter, can a moderator move it to a more appropriate place, please?)
I have a Kindle Paperwhite, and have some 200 books on it at the moment. The books were all sent directly to the Kindle, so I have no file of titles, etc. on my computer. I am a new user of Calibre, two days in fact, and I want to set up a library of the books I have on Kindle. I've scanned the user manual, dipping into sections I think might help, but so far can't find any mention of moving from Kindle to the computer. Clicking on the Add Book button gives me options, but all seem to want files, which I don't have. Alternatively, I'm happy to manually enter the titles into Calibre, but don't seem to be able to do this either. This would also mean that future purchases would have the same problem if sent directly to my Kindle. The only thing I can think of is to set up a database or spreadsheet, manually entering titles etc. and saving them as a file, then importing that into the Calibre library, and from there, let Calibre do its thing in regard to metadata, covers, summaries, etc. etc. and anything else it wants to do. I should add that while not completely computer illiterate, I'm not a computer whiz kid either - quite good in areas I've learned or worked out over time, but not so hot with areas with which I've not had much experience. Again, I'm sorry if this is really, really basic, but I would appreciate any help anyone can give, and if it can't be done, then so be it. |

Yes. If you connect your Kindle via usb to the computer running calibre Calibre will recognise it and a new device icon will appear next to the library icon. Clicking on this item will show the books on the Kindle. Right clicking gives you the option to put the selected books in your library. If you have set up Apprentce Alf's tools DRM will be removed from the books added.

As Darryl says, a right-click in calibre is what you want, to import from the Kindle. But there are two caveats:
(1) Some picture-heavy books (and only some, not all such books) downloaded directly to a Kindle come in two parts - a .azw3 for the text and a .azw6 for the pictures. calibre doesn't understand the .azw6 format, and the imported book will be without its images. (2) Many of the books will have DRM which means that calibre will be able to store them and their metadata (title, author, etc) but will not be able to display or convert them The solution for (2) is easy - Apprentice Alf's DRM removal plugin for calibre 'DeDRM'. See Apprentice Alf's blog for a download and instructions. The solution for (1) is more tedious. At the Amazon web site you can download books 'for transfer via USB' to your Kindle. Books downloaded to your computer in this way never come in two parts - the pictures will always be included in the .azw3 file downloaded, and importing that file into calibre will get you the entire book. And if you have the DeDRM plugin installed and configured, you'll be able to read or convert the full book, including illustrations, with calibre |

Thank you both - quite simple, really, when one knows what to do! I now have all my Kindle books in my Calibre library in my computer, and will play with it tomorrow (it's 3am here). I haven't downloaded Apprentice Alf's plugin yet - will do that tomorrow also. I'm exceedingly grateful for your help.
Also, pdurrant, thank you for your reference to Kai Lung - I have a couple of Bramah's Kai Lung books - not ebooks - and will certainly be visiting Amazon for this and others if they're available. |

Just a reminder/hint for DRM removal. Alf's plug-ins only work during the import of books into Calibre. It can do nothing for books already in your library.
If you want to use it, you will have to re-import all books. |
