How do I move a book from Kindle for Windows 8 to Calibre?

I've installed Calibre and installed Kindle for Windows 8. All I want to do is move the Kindle book to Calibre so that I can read it there. Or convert it to html or rtf. Does anyone know how to do this? Pretty sure it would take about two seconds in a sane OS.

Thanks,
Bjorn

Books from Amazon are usually protected by DRM. You would need to remove the DRM to convert it to other format. I can't provide any guidance on that, but if you search the net you will find information.

As far as where the physical files are stored, they are most likely in your user's AppData (local storage, %appdata%). Take a look in that folder for a folder named Kindle. They probably named the actual book file with a hash, but you should be able to see the extension to recognize it is your books if you have extensions enabled in explorer.

The book is from Ring of Fire Press. Since they're closely associated with Baen Publishing, there's no DRM.

%appdata% does not have a Kindle folder in it. :-(

Not the direct answer to your question:
When you buy a book from webscriptions, you buy the BOOK.
Why not simply download the alternate formats from Baen?

I would expect books to be kept somewhere (may be hidden: set folder to Show Hidden) in your User folder.

Ok, I found a solution: I downloaded Kindle for Windows 7 to my Windows 8 desktop. Kindle for Windows 7 tells you the pathway to where it saves stuff (gasp!) and then you go there from Calibre and pick up the book. And all of a sudden the book's formatting improved, too.

:-)

Thanks for your help,
Bjorn

So actually your initial complaint should NOT fault the O/S but rather the Kindle application for Windows 8

This does sound pretty annoying, but I'm not sure it's an app-dependent thing. Win8 seems to incorporate a lot of MS knows best into its design, and MS did change some things about how app permissions work with it. Long live Win7 if hiding folders is an app habit on Win8.

Windows 8 is just a mess. It turns out a lot of Windows 8 versions of programs are not as good as the Windows 7 version. This yet another example of this.

You do not seem to be aware that with Windows 8 one has the choice of running both the "modern" touch oriented Store Apps (those often, but not always, oriented to use on smaller devices or to users with simple needs) and the "traditional" often more capable desktop applications. You do not have to choose one or the other as you infer, and even legacy desktop applications run just fine, and normally faster and more reliably under Windows 8 compared to earlier Windows versions.

Why Amazon have chosen to refer to their desktop Kindle reader the "Windows 7" version I have no idea, it is nonsense to do so. If there is the implication that it is not suited to Windows 8 then one must also apply the same logic and assume that it does not run under Vista nor XP. In fact it runs fine under those and Windows 8 and if one wants the greater freedom that the desktop application offers on a PC then one is free to use it.

The Kindle Store App is a bit clunky on a PC but that is an Amazon problem, not a Windows 8 one (others have built very good Apps for both PC and small device use). Amazon need to tidy it up if they anticipate it being used on PCs and should avoid confusion and rename their erroneously called "Windows 7" application (in fact in the ebook store it is called Kindle for PC). I don't use either much apart from accessing Kindle books, not reading them, so I will leave it to others to complain to Amazon .

And my experience is that the Kindle Store App stores books in the same folder as the desktop version does, and that in the Users folder tree (as it did under Windows 7, as best I recall).

Theducks,

Yes, that's always true of Baen Books but RoF Press is publishing books that weren't ever going to get a publishing slot from Baen. RoF Press has listed these at Amazon exclusively, at least for the first 90 days. I would certainly buy them from Baen and download the .rtf file if that were an option.
