Is conversion creating one or two versions of a book ?

A silly question : when you launch a conversion process for a given book using calibre, from format A to format B, what is the result : the original book with format A + a new book with format B, or just the new book with format B ?

Is the choice between these two possibilities parameterizable ?
Thanks.

The original book with format A + a new book with format B.

The original is always kept. I don't think there's a preference to delete it. (Storage is cheap.)

OK, I understand my mistake : after conversion, the two versions are included in the same Library directory, and in the interface there is displayed just one line (or one icon) for the two versions !!

Yes. One entry in the calibre database can have multiple different formats attached to it. That way you only need to edit the metadata once.

You really should treat the Library Folders as a Black Box.
Messing there breaks linkages to the DB.
Almost anything that needs to be done there, is handled by the GUI/CLI.

BTW Think of the spreadsheet line as a Book in any form(at)

I use [Preferences], [Interface], and [Add your own Columns] to create a column to show the different formats (epub, azw3, pdf, etc.) available from each entry

OK but what do I do if I want to visualize separately the two versions to compare them ? One may be better than the other and I want to be able to rate them. Moreover I could have to delete one version : if it is decidedly too bad why keep it underneath ? I could also want to export just one version. Does the "black box" enable all these ?

Most of that as standard!
- You can use the option to View a specific format for each format to visually compare them
- You can use the Export specific format option
- You can use the Delete Specific format option.
The only thing it would not allow (without using a custom column) is to provide two ratings.

Thanks, itimpi, I shall explore all that. I am still a beginner as far as calibre is concerned, I just installed it...

EDIT I found all these options. Very easy to use. calibre is great !

I am also confused about the way calibre treats the ebooks. So I made it simple (for me). I drag'n'drop the ebook from a different folder, so I have the original there (should it happen something to it ). Once the conversion is ready, I delete the copy of the original, to have only the converted book there.
In this moment I know exactly what I edit and how. Well, it has to be one of the formats calibre knows how to edit, but I use only ePub so this is solved.

@phossler It is a very good idea to add a Format column, I did it and it is much clearer... Thanks for the suggestion.
