Just wanted to say Hello! to the community on this fantastic resource site.

I live in New York City, and I'm looking forward to owning a portable reading device some time this year to keep me company on my daily commute. I've been reading up a little on the available devices and am currently leaning towards the Amazon Kindle due to the cheaper content and connectivity, but the Sony Reader 505 is under consideration as well for its lower price, sweeter form factor and immediate availability.

I have seen just one of each device being used so far here in NYC. The Kindle sighting was a genuine surprise (especially given its apparent scarcity -- 6-week wait, anyone?). It really is very compact, and unlike some of the online dating experiences I've heard about

, actually looks more attractive in real life than in some of the images available online.

Hey Chrissy. You know, never judge a book by its cover. The Kindle looks a lot nicer if it's your own. At least in this regard, it's similar to many potential online dating experiences.

I am going to be in NYC this weekend. I hope the weather plays nice!

Alexander: The city is beautiful right now with spring blooms just starting out, and the warmer weather is great. It might rain over the weekend, but I think those forecasts couldn't predict the sun setting on some days, honestly. In the event of a rain day, there's a very interesting exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art right now on the 6th floor that I'd recommend, called Design and the Elastic Mind. Admission to MoMA is also currently free on Friday nights.

pilotbob: Funny you should mention that, it did probably wind up on someone's dinner plate. I saw a tub of these strange fish at a market in Singapore and couldn't resist taking a pic. Makes for a good conversation starter, if not good eats!

Hi chrissy and welcome to the Forum. I've got a Sony 505 and really like it but I expect the Kindle is also damn good. be sure and let us know what you finally decide on and how you like it.

BTW, you ought to recognize the location of my avatar. Although I live in Northern VA, I'm Brooklyn (and NYC) to the core.

The current Kindle wait looks as though it's been cut to around 2 weeks - at least that's the ship date they're now quoting. Which is a step up, as the first one I ordered I waited 6 weeks for, and got no hint of when it would ship until it actually did ship.

I finally ordered the Kindle! It was shipped out the same day with free 2-day shipping and is arriving later today.
