Hi,
I haven't rooted my reader, but I did have morkl's updated reader app installed. The reader was starting to misbehave - trying to choose the font list crashed the reader; it also had the common problem with dictionary access hanging the device... So I thought a good firmware update might help. After trying to update the firmware yesterday from 1.0.04 to 1.0.05, my reader appears to have got stuck in a reboot cycle. I've got rupor-rescue extracted onto an SD card inserted into the reader. At the moment it is connected to my Mac over USB, the boot screen is up ("Opening book...") and the LED is flashing orange a couple of times. After about a minute, the screen goes black and it apparently reboots. What can I do to recover it? I think I'm looking to connect to the recovery console and then do some kind of factory reset, but as the device doesn't seem to ever appear on the USB bus (hard to tell) I don't know how to communicate with it. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi! |

I would ask this question at this link for Sony Development Corner
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=141 Getting questions answered might be slow during holiday season. If info is coming out of Russia, biggest holiday is new years and it really shuts down about now. Their new year is a little later than ours but they tend to celebrate both and time in between. Never pass up good reason to party. |

It looks like I need to send it back to Sony for repair, and I've no idea how much that might cost. (Any ideas what they charge?) I suspect it is time to get a new reader instead. |

Anything you'll be charged will be too much. It will be cheaper to buy a new reader.

You might check on how much would it cost to repair from Sony. It might not cost that much or worse comes to worse they will offer you the T2 as a replacement for a small fee. But then again this was back in the day.

But I went out and bought a Kobo Aura, which is great and feels much faster than the T1. |

True, and I didn't mean to imply this was a Sony-specific economic choice. To be fair to Sony they do note that repairs may be uneconomic based on the price of the unit (etc).

I just heard back from the Sony Repair centre - they charge £28 (non-refundable) just to look at it as it is out of warranty, and then there are repair costs (unknown) on top of that.
That doesn't make economic sense for me. Ah well... |

argos have factory refurbished ones at £49.99 on ebay, with a 6 month guarantee if you don't 'fess up to dabbling & bricking it
![]() I paid about that for a used T2 but I was lucky i think - none at that price listed now. |

If they are available in your country, get a Nook STR. They are much easier to root than a T1 and a far superior e-ink tablet, and dirt-cheap. Don't get the lighted version. I have rooted both a T1 and a Nook STR.

I went out and got a Kobo Aura a couple of days after it was clear I wouldn't be able to resuscitate the T1. It would have been handy to have had the T1 fixed/replaced for cheap, but not essential.
The Aura is a nice device, I'm very happy with it. |
