upgrading firmware without syncing
I apologize if this is covered elsewhere but I couldn't find the answer anywhere. This may be a stupid question but how do you upgrade the firmware without going through the Kobo desktop? I don't want to sync with each update because we have 2 Kobos (both Touch) in the house, using the same account, but with different books so the sync function will always mess up one of our libraries. Does the Kobo automatically look for upgrades on a regular basis or is it only triggered by doing a sync? If a sync is not required, could someone walk me through what I have to do? So far, I have only managed to upgrade via sync.

I wish they let us pick and chose which books to sync on the desktop application.

At least they do let you choose, book by book, whether or not to download a book onto your device when you are starting from scratch. That was (IMO) a huge step forward.
You can remove all the books from "I'm Reading" on the website, then bookmark the ones you want to sync from your "Purchased List" and it will only sync those. Just write down your page number for the book(s) you have open. We have two readers--one WiFi and one Touch--at our house. At this point, neither of us have the whole meal deal on our readers. We have backups of everything, but keep only what we are reading and our purchased, but not yet read, books on the reader itself. Last edited by taming; 07-29-2011 at 06:39 PM. |

Taming, we basically do the same except that my husband and I tend to buy on impulse and as a result always have 10-15 unread, purchased books on our Kobos, and unfortunately they are all different. We purchase through Wifi so we don't have to download from the desktop but I am still not clear as to whether or not we can install firmware upgrades via wifi without connecting the Kobo to the computer. So far, I have only been able to do the upgrades by syncing, which requires me to go into the Kobo desktop and move my books to the I'm Reading, then sync the desktop with the kobobooks site, then sync the Kobo with the desktop. After that, I have to back out what I did and do the same for my husband's books in order to upgrade his Kobo. Is there a way to just upgrade via Wifi and skip the desktop syncs?

Yeah, just press the cloud with the two curved arrow chasing each other on the home screen. I just did it.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. SF&F is correct. I haven't hooked my reader up to the desktop application since the first time I used it--and the initial update was the only one that required it.

I tried this last time but I ended up with my husband's books (which were on the desktop from my prior sync). If I go into the desktop and clear the 'I'm Reading' to leave the desktop empty, will pressing the cloud just update the software or will it clear out my library to zero because the desktop is empty?

Check this thread out --> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=142100
I think that an option that should work.. The firmware can be found at http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwa...rade-1.9.9.zip I think the steps would be to ensure that Kobo Desktop was NOT active then attach the Kobo and place the files from the download as mentioned in that thread. Again; I have NOT done this myself so have no idea on the accuracy of these instructions. |

Both of our Kobos have current firmware (going through the motions of changing the 'I'm Reading' for each machine prompted my question) so I won't be updating in the near future. I am not sure I want to try a workaround anyway as I am not at all techie and would probably end up worse off than when I started. I will probably stay the course for now and only go through the trouble of resyncing both readers for significant upgrades. I will keep cheking these boards to see if any upgrades involve fixing the 2 reader/ 1 account problem. Thanks everyone!

I somehow doubt you will ever see a fix for 2 readers / 1 account issue...
