Library count not matching the number of books

I have 358 books in the library. The number next to the "isbn" identifier is 359. When I click on it, on the bottom of the screen shows '358 books'. All other book numbers and totals add up.

How do I find "ghost" book?

Calibre: 1.1.14.0

The ID of a book (which is probably what you have next to the ISBN) does not follow the number of books in the library. It is a simple incremental number, unique to that book.

Therefore, if you add, say, 12 books to an empty library, the next book you add will be #13. Now delete book #5. Book #13 is still #13, but there's now only 12 books in the library, and no "ghost book".

Or maybe I didn't understand your question.

Ah! Yeah, the problem is clearer.

Now seeing this... I thought at first that there was maybe a book with two ISBNs, but I've tried that and the second is automatically removed (Well actually the second in the identifiers list had priority and the first is removed).

Strange...

EDIT: Try to install the Quality Check addon; the "Check metadata/CheckISBN" option can maybe track the error.

I installed Quality Check and found no errors.
Books > Check Library also show "no errors"

What about a search like "identifiers:isbn and not identifiers:amazon" ?

EDIT: Also, try to add a custom column, and click "isbn" on the new column form. When you've got Calibre restarted, sort by ISBN, enlarge the column, and see if there's one of 'em that doesn't look right.

Hm.

I've got a couple more things to try, but it involves installing an SQLite database explorer; mine is actually an addon for Firefox. Are you okay with that? I don't want to tell you what to install on your own computer...

Not all books will always have all 3 identifiers
Are you sure you don't have a Virtual Library (or saved search) in place?

Try this search (NOT tested. might not work)

His (her?) screenshot tends to show that there are only 358 book in the collection/library/virtual library. Since the tag browser lists 359 ISBNs, either a book has two ISBNs, or the identifiers table has an orphan record (a record whose 'book' field has an ID not in the `books`table).

If the former, your search query (I didn't know that one, thanks) should show which book.

If the latter, a query like 'SELECT * FROM identifiers WHERE book NOT IN (SELECT id FROM books)' should list the record in error.

edit: identifiers:isbn:#>0 returns no book, so I don't know if identifiers:isbn:#>1 would work after all...

Oh, and my query is, of course, an SQL query and should be run from an sqlite explorer program. Running it in Calibre would have no useful effect.

Thank you very much for all the help. I followed instructions and found orphaned entry in identifiers table. I deleted it and it is all good now.
