Show Total Number of Books in Calibre Library
I got the latest version of Calibre today and the Calibre Library column at top of page says just that. I have been using version 0.9.29 as it is the only version that shows that total number of Books in my calibre library. Is there a way to edit that column under preferences of wherever to show the total number of books?

Bottom left-hand corner of the calibre window shows the book count for me in v1.0.0.

The count display location move and was improved in its informativeness.
It is now on the bottom and indicates the number of books in the current VL, and the number selected.

Not too long, although I don't remember exactly when. I know I still look for it in its old location, so I haven't gotten used to its new spot yet.

I remember it was moved as an "improvement" because of virtual libraries (since I'm not using those, I don't know what it improves, though).

Right.
The base number is the number of ENTRIES in the current view, not (always) the number of e-books.

I have 900+ Dead Tree (empty books) logged. They are included

the [nnn] selected part is a OMG , savior as some of the selections may have been off screen when you select an action that you thought only had included 2 books

I think you'll find the changes that put the counters into the status line appeared in late May 2013 - version 0.9.33
