Avoiding previews being loaded?

Is there any way to prevent previews being downloaded to the Desktop and across to my Touch?

For that matter, is there any reason to launch the desktop other than checking for firmware updates? It seems not, but there could be things that haeven't occurred to me.

Thanks for any observations.

You don't even have to launch the desktop to check for a firmware update, just do a wireless sync. If there is new firmware available it'll download it and ask if you want to install it now or the next time you power up.

As to previews, you have to ask for them. Or at least the only way I get any is by pressing the preview button on the Kobo web site or on the device. If I don't do that, none are downloaded to my devices.

Would really be nice to be able to mark books & previews on the Kobo app to NOT sync with your Kobo device. My biggest peeve is that you cannot add a book to your wishlist and then delete the preview from your library without it being deleted from your wishlist as well.

The logic could be that if you have it on your wishlist and then download a preview, if you then delete the preview it means you are no longer interested in the book. But, from looking at the database, I suspect that they are simply deleting all record of book when the preview is deleted.

I agree about the Kobo desktop app. It should do more management. At the least it should list all books like the "Purchased" list on the site. That way the book can be marked to put onto the device at the next sync or not. Being able to mark books to go to a particular device would also be good.

Depends on where you are in the world, of course. I have wireless disabled on my Touch, because from here it doesn't work anyway. :-)

Hmm. That's not been my experience, so I wonder what's different? I get previews I wouldn't have asked for and really don't want, hence my question.

Are these in the 'Previews" section of the library? From memory, some of the older firmware did download some previews without you selecting them, but it hasn't happened for a a few firmware versions.

"Recommendations" do get put on the device without any interaction, but they don't have a book file, only a cover and database entry. The recommendations can be questionable, but if you buy a few books from Kobo, it improves.

Yeah, they're showing up in the "Previews" section of my actual Touch, not just the Desktop on my PC. On my device, I have the "Wishlist" empty, and keep a record elsewhere of books I plan to buy, specifically so I don't activate some routine on my Touch that would keep nagging me to buy things. I just want my Touch for reading.

I understand Kobo is in the business of selling books, and don't mean to stray into the question of whether I bought a stand-alone reading device or a marketing adjunct, but when unrequested previews are downloaded to my Touch, I think they qualify as spam and junk mail.

DO NOT WANT! (Star Wars reference. ;-) )
