Unlike DropBox, Box does not have sync in the free version. However, you can mount your Box drive on your PC with these instructions.

That seems to become more common lately. Personally I don't care for the convenience to spam everyone on my contact list.

Luckily there are ways around that, at least if your Android device is rooted.
Cyanogenmod has the capability already build in, and there are apps in the Market for other rooted ROMs (google for Android Permissions +block/app or something like that).
