Sounds like what happens to a device sometimes when connected to an underpowered USB port. The best solution for charging a 505 is a PSP charger IMO.

Does it happen when left charging overnight or unattended... many PCs are set to go to sleep after a while and this can mean the port discharging the Sony rather than charging... try a PSP charger, they're cheap and work well...

Make sure you plug into the usb port on the actual computer. Some usb hubs are not powered, so no power would be transferred to the reader.

It has happened to me before. Mainly overnight. So I figured it was just the computer going to sleep and draining my 505. I'm getting a psp charger next week :-)

I've got a USB to PSP adapter... it's sweet and more in-line with all the other USB to X adapters I've got...

I don't connect it to charge it - I have a separate charger. It happens when it is hooked up to transfer books from the computer to the device. It is just annoying as when i transfer the books I then have to charge before I can read!

It's weird that this happens, but it does seem to quickly drain the battery of the PRS-505 if it is connected to an unpowered or underpowered USB port. I feel like a simple diode in the right spot of the circuit could prevent this, but then I wasn't on the design team.

This is common behavior for many devices that connect and charge via USB. My cell phone will also drain quickly if it's connected to a dormant USB port; so will my MP3 player and a set of Bluetooth headphones I have.

How much can a battery drain in the minute and a half it takes to transfer a book? Devices having their battery drained connected to the PC isn't unique to Sony. It happened to my PDA once and sapped all the memory right out of it.
