Montgomery, L. M.: Anne of Ingleside. v1. 20 Feb 2026

The grown-up life of Anne Shirley…

Here we see the transition of our protagonist to a rather less prominent role, as the focus shifts to the next generation in the town of Glen St. Mary. Anne Blythe, now a mother of five (soon to be six) children, manages the daily (often comedic) drama and “sweet married romance” in her busy household at Ingleside. The novel features a series of vignettes focusing on the imaginative, sometimes troublesome, adventures of her children, with a subplot wherein Anne worries that her marriage has lost its spark, only to be reassured of Gilbert’s love.

Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) is best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables (1908). Montgomery gained international recognition during her lifetime as a result of her portrayal of the title character, orphan Anne Shirley. A prolific writer, she published 30 essays, 500 poems, 530 short stories, and 20 novels. Almost all of her works remain in print today. Although her work is frequently categorized as "juvenile fiction," adults continue to be devoted readers.
